Living room design

We have an old craftsman and I’ve struggled with our living room. I really want to add a fireplace, and even though the room isn‘t tiny, it feels like we have very limited options for where to put one/ways to arrange furniture.

Where would you put an in-wall electric fireplace and how would you arrange furniture in this living room? Note that it serves as a pathway between the front door and the rest of the house. I’d also prefer to not block the (low) front windows. I’m interested in replacing the couch and two wooden chairs that are currently in front of the windows.

Lastly, we have popcorn ceilings…would you prioritize removing those? Would you cover them with wood paneling or some other treatment?

A fireplace in the corner where the brown chair and the motorcycle picture currantly are. Be carefull, popcorn ceilings can have asbestos in them. It would be good to have a professional come in to check that for you. Asbestos is dangerous for your health especially for children.

Your living room is attractive as is. I don’t see an electric fireplace enhancing it. Two walls have large openings and you don’t want to block the front windows on the 3rd wall. If you place the fireplace under the windows on the 4th wall, it doesn’t leave a good spot for your sofa without interfering with the traffic flow. Putting a fireplace on the short wall where the chair is seems an awkward spot.

Personally I am not a fan of popcorn ceilings so my answer is ”yes” to having the popcorn ceiling removed. Use an experienced contractor that can test it first for asbestos.

A fireplace in a Craftsman style would always be placed in a symmetrical position. That doesn't appear to be possible.

I don't know your budget or your room dimensions but here's an idea. This is an electric fireplace with faux rock. Might look good IRL, might look awful, but using it to illustrate the idea. Can you get a second of the chair you already have? Don't know if this would leave passage space or not.

Regarding the popcorn ceilings, that is not original to a craftsman era house so it was probably done to cover some ceiling issues, assuming your house is Craftsman era, not just Craftsman style of a later era. I removed popcorn from my 1969 house that was original and was very pleased with the results. But, the ceilings under it were sheetrock, not plaster as yours may be. Removing the popcorn made every room look larger and taller. I would recommend it but I would have a skilled professional look at yours before beginning. it's not a DIY project, no matter what youtube says. If you do it, start in a small, tucked away room and check the results before proceeding. You have no idea what is under it and how it will react to the popcorn removal. I'm not a fan of wood ceilings so probably the wrong person to ask about that. It might easier and less expensive to cover the popcorn with 1/4" sheetrock to create a smooth ceiling.

I would prioritize removing the popcorn ceilings. The question is how much do you use this space and what do you use it for? That needs to be answered before deciding furnishings. Right now it looks like it isnt a room that is used? TV elsewhere? Second question are you trying to stay true to the craftsman style of the home? I think something like this would be lovely in the space visually if you use it for occasional entertaining, reading etc.
