I'd choose a chair like this to freshen up the space. and agree with @lisedv to move the table and lamp to the inside of the space. Drapes extended beyond the trim (you have plenty of room) even if you want to keep them open all the time for a finished look.

Take a paint chip when you shop for fabric or new chair. It is a coordinate for Palladian Blue and will work with the rug. Also suggest a new coffee table...glass to show the center medallion.

If the chairs are good quality vintage chairs, it might make sense to reupholster them - otherwise, I'd buy new ones. I've never had a wingback chair reupholstered - it seems like it would be more expensive to do.

I’m wondering before you decide on the chair’s fabric (new or reupholstered) is to consider how you can connect the components color wise. I’m having a hard time to imagine.

With upholstering there are endless fabrics/colors to choose from and perhaps consider and bring home fabric samples. If the construction is in good shape it will save money. Then compare cost/the construction of new chairs.

On another note, suggest art above couch that is larger (yours would look great hung one above the other on a smaller wall). Hope this helps, as I like to look at the bigger picture.

The blue walls with the navy sofa and red rug looked great until I brought in the chairs. I knew this was over my abilities. I do appreciate everyones help. I think I’ll get some newer, shorter chairs in a cream in a performance fabric and see from there. Thanks for your very helpful input.

Very strict looking space so maybe 2 chairs that are a little less stiff . I aslo like a piano placed where the player faces the room so maybe play a bit with that too. The art IMO is not ideal on that wall since it really does not work for such a large wall. The chairs need to have a way to put down a drink so maybe when you play with the piano placemetn you can put 2 chairs SXS with a table in between and a much larger lamp . Then a piano light and some more lighting in the space .Maybe the piano angled in the corner to make it a bit less stiff for the layout.

In our other house, the chairs were in a bay window with a table lamp in between so I agree with you on that. With the grandkids and granddogs, the only soft white that works is a washable slip cover. My husband wants to keep the chairs. Would a soft white cover like this work and hem kept shorter to match bare sofa legs?

It will be less expensive to change the rug and not reupholster the chairs. Besides that red rug is not working in your room.

I reupholstered two wingback chairs about 7 years ago in Tennessee. I bought the fabric online and the cost was about $600 per chair. They have lots of beautiful welting, which added to the cost. Where you live will determine the cost of this labor.

Yes, RedRyder's room is lovely. It works because the solid fabric on the chairs allows the rug to dominate. I don't think that the pattern on your chairs works with any of the Persian rugs. If you are going to keep your existing chairs, choose a more subdued rug. If you want to keep your rug, choose a different, complementary pattern on the chairs, like a stripe, mini-print, paisley, flame-stitch, check, or even a solid. A slipcover would also work, but just not bright white like your photo.

I think a creamy beige, or even a pale sage fabric on those chairs would work. I’m not there to see the all the colors in your rug.
Get fabric samples. Buy a yard of the top two, and throw them over your chairs. Live with them a week and see which you like best. Or you’ll discover neither works.

I am an area rug nut. My house has gorgeous Oushak rugs in every room and the furniture has to be quiet, solid colors to make the rugs the main event. I would do that here as well. Your rug is stunning, so the chair fabric needs to be a solid.

I like the suggestion to reupholster the wing chairs in solid fabric (not pure white), no skirt.

Because the wing chair backs are taller than the sofa back, perhaps repositioning the two chairs with a small table and lamp between them across from the sofa would look better (assuming this configuration works with the room measurements and the piano). If you're up for moving the furniture around, please post a photo of this layout.

Is that a pale blue in the rug? A washed out, pale blue could be beautiful on those chairs.

If you slipcover the chairs I would suggest making a long skirt for them. The furniture grouping looks a little “leggy” so take it to the floor to help that. Adding accessories and greenery always help pull a room and color scheme together.

Perhaps replace the chairs altogether. They don't look particularly comfortable. Perhaps select chairs that are more overstuffed with lower backs.

So, I see you decided to do light blue walls- and now, you are looking for chair reupholstery and/or slipcover ideas. There are many ways you can go.

I created a few visuals for you.

First: Consider that you may really still be able to incorporate the existing chair fabric into your current color scheme... just by simply adding a few accessories.

Along these lines:

Notice the color on the lumbar pillows on wing chairs- and also the color on sofa pillows. This type of approach may be all you need to connect the dots. Even simply adding a couple of blue lumbars for the chairs and/or a blue throw on one of the chairs- may be enough. So this may be something for you to consider. Very easy.

If you decide to go further: Since you have mentioned that you are wanting easy care with children visiting, etc.- slipcovers for the chairs may be ideal. Slipcovers can also offer you a lot of flexibility- because you are not locked into one color or style; you can easily change them up. You can have some slipcovers made. But also don’t rule out pre-made. For example, Amazon has a ton of wing chair slipcovers- many fabric/design options.

I also thought that picking up on the red color from the rug in the chairs might be interesting.
