Rain Makes Colors Deeper and Flowers Bigger

The Monday-Tuesday storms put just over 1.5 inches of rain in my guage, so the daylilies and I are very happy with all that moisture. Today's blooms were looking the right size and color as opposed to some of the earlier first flowers.

Extreme Tangerine had its ffe today - another midseason bloomer that overwintered in my garage. The scapes are very tall. Good job on that one, Nan!

Empire of Dawn and Dusk had its ffo today. I used to grow Empire of Dawn and Dusk in a pot in Nashville. Unfortunately it somehow didn't get to Indy when I moved, so Mike Derrow sent me a free replacement with my order last Spring. It's finally blooming this season, and it is extremely well-budded with about 20 buds per scape.

Roaring Rapids X Razor Sharp had its ffo yesterday. The scapes are shorter than last season, probably due to surrounding plants having such tall foliage and covering it up. I'll need to move it a different location later.

Bubblegum Queen - I have three clumps of my intro. This ffo is on the one planted next to the house, and scapes on this one are short and the bud count low. The other two clumps have tall scapes with much better bud counts and probably won't start bloom for several days. It just goes to show location can mean everything to a cultivar's performance.

About seven more daylilies had first flowers open today, but some didn't fully open, some had bug damage, and some just took terrible photos in the full sun.

Yes, the rain was very beneficial, here too, but the hottest day so far this year today. Maybe the BQ next to the house gets too much shade. Foliage is big this year, so I have had to cut back space hogs (and a lot are in that category this year).

I know about those sun photos! Even though I am out early, the sun is so intense it impacts the pics. Extreme Tangerine is a bright one I bet you can pick out in the garden! I’m glad you replaced Empire of Dawn and Dusk. The seedling is a pretty one.

Mantis - I've been cutting back a lot of space hogs too! The short BQ may be the victim of too much shade and too little rain. A nearby shrub needs to be trimmed, and most of that BQ may be planted under the eaves of the house.

Kate - Extreme Tangerine is very bright in color. I don't have many oranges, but the ones I have tend to make themselves known.

Nice set of blooms and yes, the rain does make a difference in the blooms. Extreme Tangerine is one I would pick for my garden. Different color combination. Good to know it has good scape height for you. I'll have to go and look it up.

Gald you got rain! We got 2” yesterday and overnight and it looks like you benefited from the same storms.

Sherry - BQ is only doing OK. It doesn't have the side branching it had in Nashville. BQ and most of my seedlings have reduced bud count here. Glad you are getting some substantial rain. We got a little bit more overnight - only about a quarter of an inch.

Bubblegum Queen is very pretty and I have so enjoyed Extremem Tangerine in my garden since I do love orange ones. And it is a very tall one.
