Saturday's Daylilies With FFO

I sure appreciated the cooler temps and lack of humidity yesterday which allowed me to get back to weeding. I love the rain, but a ton of weeds always follow.

White Ambrosia ffo - This Southern evergreen made it through the hard winter OK. Scapes are only about an inch shorter than last year, while bud count is about the same.

Unbound had its first flower open about three days ago, but the first bloom was damaged by rain. This morning's flower was looking much better. Stats on Unbound are about the same as last year. The scapes, I think, are a bit taller. I've had no increase on this Hansen since I moved here, but I did set pods on it last year.

Pink Aloha X Bubblegum Queen #1 has improved its height and bud count since last year. This is an evening picture and the color is a bit blown-out, but it had such pretty ruffling and angel wings that I had to show it.

Red Edition X The Ultimate Sacrifice

Empire of Dawn and Dusk never had color this good when I grew it in Nashville. The eye and edge were more of a plum. But this week in cool temps there is not much red at all in that dark purple eye and edge.

I love White Ambrosia-love the ruffles! Unbound is another pretty one and the Pink Aloha seedling is also another very ruffled delight. Many seem to be settling in.

My least favorite combination is white with an eye. But there are exceptions (I grow Pandora's Box for instance). Your picture of Empire of Dawn and Dusk is one of them. That is brilliant......Your Red Edition seedling is looking good too. Colors and eye pattern very attractive........Being a fan of yellow you would think I would have tried Bill Norris. Never have for some reason. It's a nice one...............Maryl

I love the Red Edition seedling today. I am a fan of yellow, it is such a nice contrast i the garden. I have never grown Bill Norris, it is a beauty.

Maryl and Sherry - There's a reason so many daylily vendors still sell Bill Norris. It's a classic yellow that's hard to beat. Last winter's many days below zero did not seem to bother it. Thanks for your comments on the Red Edition seedling. It makes a big splash and the red color stays bright unless temps go into the high 90s.

Maryl - The colors of Empire of Dawn and Dusk very much remind me of those on Pandora's Box, which was one of the first daylilies I grew.

So many pretty ones! I like White Ambrosia and your two seedlings. I especially like the Red Edition one. Empire of Dawn and Dust looks good. It has been a really important parent for us.

UNBOUND and RED EDITION seedling are my favorites. Love the edge and halo on the REx TUS seedling. THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE might be one to consider adding to the collection.

Debra: These look great. I am partial to yellow for that pop in the garden but the reds are extremely vibrant.White Ambrosia has such great ruffles on it. I guess it likes your zone.

Empire of Dawn and Dusk looks good . Bill Norris can be glowing in the early garden--a time often overlooked by people seeking "season extenders." White Ambrosia, I see, is a later Trimmer.

David - Most people who've tried to grow The Ultimate Sacrifice in the far north (Michigan and Vermont) have lost it and the kids from it.

Julia - White Ambrosia is blooming OK after our awful winter, but it hasn't increased in fans since it moved here. I would say it tolerates this zone rather than likes it.

Nancy - I once had the Red Edition seedling marked for registration as it had shown bud counts of 17-23 and multiplied rapidly in Nashville. Then grubs hit the clump. Here lower bud stats and lack of multiplying don't make it a candidate for selection. I'll continue to grow it though because I do love the bloom and am using it as a bridge plant.
