Blooms in Unfriendly Weather

Today's blooms were marred by brief yet damaging morning rain, but bugs and heat have also taken a toll. Coolness this coming week will be welcome, by humans at least.

Small World Fire in the Hole (5 inches) has looked good at the estate. Originally grown in my home garden (3 blocks away), it was always filled with earwigs and chewed up because it partially opened very early. The estate, for some reason, has no earwigs (though it can have splotchy blooms from humidity or whatever). I never see partial opening the night before or in the wee hours as a positive.

Works for Me, a Norris.

Heroes on Horseback (a view from a lower level).

Heavenly Starfire has huge flowers. It has looked good.

My Heart Belongs to Daddy has looked especially good, with good scape height and bud count.

Mister Butters has been a glowing clump with a lot of greenish tones this year.

Smuggler's Fire has been saved in a not ideal spot; it has drawn attention so far this year. Celeste always liked this one.

Princess Sonja, still one fan after two years. In real life, things didn't pan out.

Mower King. A huge flower from Holmes.

Down Home has glowed in a sea of green. Oh those Stamile pinks.

Stone Palace Swagger has done well this year, though with all the chewing occurring in the sauna of last week, not every flower has been as perfect as this one.

Red Venom has a large flower. Turns more pinkish as day progresses. Taken mid-day. A Hensley from Debra.

Small World Fire in the Hole always captivates me. I wonder why the estate doesn't get the earwigs you do. Too bad Princess Sonja hasn't multiplied. It has such a pretty bloom. Down Home is a nice shade of pink, and I enjoyed seeing Red Venom in your garden.

Debra, the extate daylily plantings are all in narrow beds surrounded by concrete. They are also primarily sunny. Earwigs thrive in moist, warm, humid conditions. Thankfully, I get some shade in most of my home garden, so moisture lingers more. But other than the sun and absence of debris, I too am not sure why earwigs don't show up there (knock on wood). As for Princess, one parent has RFK in the background, and RFK doesn't have a good record here.

I agree that Small World Fire in the Hole looks good-one that will make one look twice. I like Mower King and My Heart Belongs to Daddy. Down Home had few scapes here but it is now in the shade so I think that impacts it. Stamile pinks began my daylily love for pinks I think. Stone Palace Swagger has a nice color. I keep wondering when my Works For Me has not even scaped. I have a few like that.

Our Princess Sonja was just one fan for two years, but it finally has begun to increase a little. I really like the flower. I love the shape and color of Mower King.

My ears perked up when you mentioned a Hensley. Red Venom is a pretty color in your picture even if it lightens up as the day goes along. Because our heat is so high, probably best to stay in a cooler climate though.......Stone Palace Swagger is nice. Again, I would bet our heat would slicken that dark color. But it is a pretty one.........I love the placement of Mower King against the brick wall. Looks great............Maryl

You have alot of blooms going even with the less than stellar weather. How tall is Heroes on Horseback?

Heroes is around 40 inches tall. Sturdy stems.
