After Heavy Rain

Unexpectedly, we had 5 inches of rain last night, with most towards morning (unfortunately), so none of these pics are after that beating. Generally, the season is not going well. Many cultivars are smallish, segments seem less full and colors less vibrant, insect damage (earwigs and thrips) is widespread, and many have low bud counts or bud drop. This may change, but I fear that a lot is already baked in the cake

All American Chief is a big clump, but flowers seemed stunted.

Early Shirley bucked the disappointing tide.

Free Wheelin with Nancy's Buckleberry Ferry (very well budded and striking in the garden).

I had to do another Heroes because of the backdrop.

Mister Butters continues

Derrow's Summer Stitchery gleamed in the garden.

Chili Spice (an evergreen) called out with good bud count.

It has not been a season to remember overall although some have done unusually well and others no nearly up to regular bloom.

Is your fifth photo Lovestruck Linda? It looks good I as do most of your other photos. Joe Burrows will probably clear up and look beautiful as always.

HOUZZ lost this for a while. I always put descriptions. Yes, so far, not a season one would wish to repeat.

So many lovely blooms. It is hard to believe you aren t having a good season. I really enjoy seeing your Free Wheelin, it was my hubbies favorite. It gave up here two seasons ago. I believe the only evergreen I have now is Undercurrent. It is doing well.

Same here with All American Chief except that with me the scapes are much shorter. I am seeing this with many lates and wonder if the late freeze and I mean really low temps for here had any impact on those. Mower King is eyecatching as is Heroes on Horseback. Early Shirley put on quite a show.

Wow, 5 inches of rain is a lot! I bet there was a lot of flash flooding in your area. My yard got almost 2 inches of rainfall last night. All this moisture bodes well for rebloom! From these photos, one would never guess you're having a bad season. These at least look vibrant and vigorous. I have a few with stunted blooms too, and thrips have found my garden. (Last year I didn't have any.) All American Chief always captures my attention, and Mister Butters does too. Linda Sierra has such pretty colors. I had to destroy that one twice since it was a horrible rust bucket in Nashville.

That's the kind of bright red I like on All American Chief. Nice poly on the center bloom......Again, Mower King and the brick wall look good together.....I grew Linda Sierra briefly. The color wasn't that great here and the pattern faded by half by mid afternoon. It always looks so tempting in cooler climates....... Good year here so far. We went from 97 to 72 when the front moved in today. Just to not hear the steady monotonous hum of the air conditioner was a welcome relief............ Sorry to hear about all that rain you way..........Maryl
