Here I have two Japanese white pine Tanima no yuki (Snow in the Valley) grafted onto different rootstocks. The one on the left is grafted on Himalayan pine, and its color and shape match the typical variety available in Europe and the US. The one on the right is the standard version available and distributed in Japan, grafted on Pinus thunbergii. Although both originate from Japan, they look quite different side by side. The white variegation is less intense, and the needles are shorter on the specimen bought in Japan. Could these differences in shape be attributed to the different rootstocks used?"
