Love the look of candles or lamps in windows. We had window candles in our last house. I had seen them when visiting the Lancaster area of PA and brought the idea home. Our current house is a different style and this would not really work, I miss the look.

My bargain this week was a full bedroom set for my grandson, maker Stanley. When my son was two I bought him a full bedroom set, maker Stanley. It held up so beautifully, that when he had a son, I told him to come and get it for his son’s room. It’s classic, it will never go out of style. This week I came across the same set on Facebook Market and they wanted $300. It’s a heavy well made set. Sent info to my son, because his other son could use bedroom furniture. Time to transition. The boy is now 3 years old. Well by the time I was done sending all info to my son, the Poster marked it FREE. It’s in mint condition! What a bargain! Looks beautiful in his room😁

Driving through a neighborhood one evening, I saw a house with the sheers drawn, but you could see the glow of a lamp at the window through them. I wondered, when people decorate, do they consider the view from outside? Because it was so warm and charming.

When our kitchen table pendant went out, we placed a brass lamp on the table until we got the pendant taken care of. The lamp is right in front of the window. We love it so much, from the inside and outside, that now that the pendant is fixed we never use the overhead, just the lamp.

My front facing windows are either behind an azalea hedge or in little dormers not condusive to lamps - size and lack of power. I recently got new faux candles for this outdoor fixture and decided to get a second set for the front windows -- probably only for the winter holidays or special occasions. They all turn on together with a remote and then you can set a timer so they will come on at the same time and go off the same time until reset. When I was young, my parents had plug in lights in the windows and later battery operated ones that you had to turn on individually. These are so much easier --AND they can be a steady light or flame and the flame setting is very subtle. I didn't think we would use that setting, but I really like it - even with 5 candles on at once. That's my find.

My bargain is a pair of chairs I won in an online auction for $10. My plan is to either do them very colorfully for my sewing room or do them in school colors for my son's choir room. I may do a set of each if I get another pair.

We have a center window in our attic that I think would be cute with a lamp on an automatic timer, but there really isn’t enough space for a table in front of the window. Maybe I could do candles on a timer!

We have three windows in our attic and I leave the light on all the time. When we come home at night it looks so… homey. I put three candles up there during the Christmas season and love the message!

My most recent bargains are a NWOT pair of lined, wool trousers (Talbots) from ThredUp and a wool fair isle sweater (J Crew) from Ebay. It was gently worn, now de-pilled and dry cleaned, ready for winter. I posted it on the What to Wear thread— this discussion made me remember it! adding… I think the pants were $28 plus shipping and the sweater was $48.

K — you leave an overhead light on all the time? or a lamp?

I have a very small-footprint floor lamp that I might put in the attic window and use a timer so it’s on from dusk to midnight. Might try it tonight and see how it looks…

We had two attic dormer windows in our last house and I had two electric candles in each. DH installed a switch for them in the garage. I loved coming home to those on! Now I’d probably use the battery kind with a remote.

Here at our current house, we have a cute accent window in our (side entry) garage that faces the street. It’s a bit high up, with a window planter outside. I have two electric candles in it. For Halloween, I use flickering orange bulbs. For Christmas, red bulbs (our light colors are incandescent red, white, and green outside).

I just love lamps and warm ambient lighting.

This is more of a crafts project than a bargain find. Someone we knew threw this out...it had been woven with vines & fell apart. DH added more bars, spray painted it...ALL I have invested is a can of black spray paint. The Ikat seat cushion is by "Pillow Perfect", something I already owned.

Jilly, here's a link. There are several options there. These are battery operated, but AA rather than the C or D ones we used to have. The same company makes solar powered ones, but I only saw them in a set of different height candles that didn't work for me. Hope you fine some you like.

I was away very recently and found a great bargain in a 1910 era mission QS oak somewhat petite glass door and sides cabinet with hammered copper integrated pull/lock - which luckily fit in my car. Now looking online for a similar vintage and style buffet/sideboard to go next to it in my LR as a TV console. Unfortunately not finding any bargains! : (

I did take advantage of the holiday sales: a throw from Pottery Barn (50% off), pillow covers from Etsy and a terra-cotta jug type vase/pot to mix in with terra-cotta pots on the front porch.

DH wants a reading lamp out there (current lighting is strictly for mood/glow). I picked a lampshade I love even though it is not Sunbrella….it will be out of the rain and direct sun but still often damp and humid so if it lasts two years I will be happy. The garden stool is for additional seating and to display plants on. Shade on sale for just under $100 (10.5 x 16”), lamp on sale for $176 and garden stool a real find on sale for $139! Now I just need to find replacements for our wicker Parsons chairs that have slowly been destroyed by the elements over seven years.

We’re having a few couples over for dinner week after next. I wanted some new napkins for this place setting and ordered cotton ones from Big A in a very small check, pale pink gingham. When they arrived they were large buffalo check and in a vivid pink— which actually goes pervectly with the rim around the Vietri plates and the dark pink wine glass. I leaning heavily into my roots with this color scheme!

Oh, and the napkins are 100% cotton and they were 12 for $19.99!

We are in Canada Niagara on the Lake Ontario. Bicycling and visiting family for a week. There is a great thrift shop here. Due to the current exchange rate it is a real bargain. I got a pretty white long sleeve top and a thick cotton light grey sweater and another light grey cotton pullover and a black soft velour top with a pretty funnel neck and silk ribbon and DH got a beautiful light forest green Pierre Cardin long sleeve dress shirt all for $17!

Allison yes that is Rose Point, it’s the pattern I have the most pieces in — as in 36 iced tea spoons and service for 14 or 16 in everything else and all the serving pieces from my MIL. I also have Damask Rose for 8 and a Christofle plated set for 12. And pewter for 10 and bamboo handled flatware for 8. Most I came by honestly….. others I bought late at night under cover of darkness 😎

Ha! I don't have that many iced tea spoons, but I do have service for 16. I had another newer set that was larger, purchased by my dad when he did not inherit his parents' Repousse sterling. I stupidly let our first born have it when we moved, and she sold it within the year, which was most likely her plan all along. I have not made that mistake since, and won't again.

I have, um, service for 12 in Crate & Barrel Hue dishware. The end. Wait, no, I have an ancillary set of small plates with dogs on them from Anthro.

My mother’s china is in boxes. Hoping DD will want them but it seems doubtful. It is white with purple violets, no idea what the name is. I am sure it’s not fancy. The only reason I have it is because my evil stepmother packed it all up and forced me to take it many years ago.

Haha, @Sueb20. Mom's china is in the semi-hidden cabinets on barstool side. Ours has been packed in boxes for the past 10yrs. Daily we use my parents' every day they bought maybe 20yrs ago. We started using in our last house, and since DH likes it, we are using it here too.

Well, they are not the SM’s dishes, they were my mother’s dishes, which is why I haven’t let them go. Yet. I know, it’s silly to just let them sit in boxes when someone could use them.

Sueb - love your lamp in the window. Whenever we go to our place in upstate PA we drive past a small log home set in the woods and they have a table lamp in the front window that is always on. I can't see what the lamp looks like but I enjoy the warm glow from the light. We had a small get together last night and I finally had the chance to tell the homeowner that I always look for his light and the welcoming feeling it gives me. He was delighted and in the true spirit of 'welcoming' asked us to stop by.

You mentioned placing a candle on the window sill in your attic. We had a window in the room above the garage and used this one on a timer because we needed the extra height.
