Black soapstone is the least expensive and is often used in chemistry labs. Generally it's not what people are looking for in a residential application. However I like the look. Because it is not in demand it might be harder to find.

Many soapstone varieties don’t have green undertones. Stormy Black, is one.

Contrary to what Main Line Kitchens said, people are often looking for a black soapstone, with minimal veining.

As @porkchop_z5b_MI suggested, take a look at M. Teixeira’s site. They are soapstone specialists, offering 10 or more varieties of this awesome countertop material, at any one time. Better yet, if you’re within a few hours drive from any of their locations, it would be worth your while to visit in person.

Teixeira is where I bought my Belvedere soapstone 10+ years ago. More recently, my son got his Anastasia soapstone there, too. Both of those are extremely hard varieties; difficult to scratch or chip. And, both are very veiny, with lots of green…which we love. 😊

As I said, it sounds like Stormy Black would suit you. No green. Minimal white veins. And, it, too, is a very hard variety.

Old Dominion and Church Hill from the Alberene quarries are also gray to black without green. I had Old Dominion in my last kitchen with natural cherry cabinets.

I have Stormy Black which is also known as PA Original. It is not oiled and is more of a very dark charcoal gray. When I wipe it with a wet cloth, it becomes dark black. It I were to oil it, then I imagine it would stay black for a very long time.

For those people who oil their soapstone, how long before you feel it needs to be re-oiled?
