How about just getting a new vanity that includes a top and sink? This would look nice. At Lowes...

I would get a wall mount light fixture, frame out the current mirror white, paint the cabinet white, new glass knobs. Paint the walls a light aqua blue.

Or, you could stain the cabinets with Rustoleum cabinet transformation. Then, you can get remnant granite for the top. Be sure to get an under mount sink for a totally updated look.

I think you should think about who will be using the space. Is it an en suite or main bath that a few ppl will be using. If it is a family bath, consider an undermount sink....easy to keep clean. If you will be changing the facet, go for a wide mounted one, without a base... also easier to clean. I'd go with a neutral solid surface countertop. I'm with Darcy on painting the cabinet. Little details make a big difference. Your curtains look too short - Either lower the rod or add a contrasting band in the colour you chose for the bathroom.

Thanks for all the great comments. Here is some background: small town house we only plan on living in for another year, won't get back $ in selling the house so no use putting anything expensive. Floor is tilled up to the vanity and is grouted into the floor, no moving that unfortunately! The tub is all one piece no changing it.
We had a two year old catastrophe and had to replace the toilet, now the tank cover will not fit between the counter top and tank. My huby has been wanting to change the bathroom, so the toilet not fitting was a great excuse.
I don't like the wall size mirror and no extension on the counter top.

I move the curtain rod up because I thought it was to low, lol, I'm not sure we're it's supposed to go, we have a chrome curved rod to go up.

I would look into a skylight. They are not as expensive as you think and natural light in a bathroom makes a huge difference.

Since you will only be there for a short time, I would keep the budget low. The big box stores could be the answer... including IKEA if you have one close by. I'm in the Toronto area and I saw a very nice vanity very similar to the first one Darzy posted at Home Depot yesterday! It was a "special buy" and included the granite top and white undermount sink. The top drawer was usable as drawer was cut to accommodate plumbing. It had to open shelf space below. Not sure if it was this... but it's an option if the sizing is right.

I like the idea of the floating shelves above the toilet for a bit of extra storage. If the grout is a big dingy, regrouting (you could do it yourself) can really freshen things up.

Can I take out the vanity but leave the tile, I have extra tile to fill in the space? To much of a project to retile the entire floor.

I'm having a hard time finding a top that's 42" and sink is off set to the right.

Vanity tops can be custom made with the sink offset, check out local granite places, you may be able to find a remnant big enough

Ok my mission this weekend is to find a counter top that fits.

After a long debate on our options for this bathroom we have made a decision! My husband and I decided if we are going to put a nice counter top in, the vanity must go. We are going to chisel out the cut tiles around the vanity and fill in the space with some leftovers. choldraker - I love it! What colors make you feel relaxed and refreshed... It's always good to pick colors that fit your comfort.

I like the cool colors. For a bathroom I like clean white look. I am more drawn to the gray colors. I think a color closer to tan or beige might work.

Would suggest a rotatable curved shower rod based on the location of the toilet. The rod provides 30% added space while bathing and then rocks 180 degrees back into the tub to add space bath to the room.
