There is a sadder story too that I will write you about i always enjoy hearing the baby bluebirds cheeping in there nest wating for their next meal. I often put out fruit and even mealy worms which they love. Amazon has a snake baffle for about $15 that might work...I wouldn't know if it dd or not. I may get one of the wire extensions to foil the mackingbirds.

Over the last 4 years we have seen about 4-6 bluebirds come to our bird bath. One nice looking fellow came in spring last year and brought his fianceee to look at our bluebird box that had had nothing but sparrows in it for 30 years. We had just cleaned it out and he thought it looked great. She did not and kept flying off. This happened about a half a dozen times until a male sparrow few up and chased them all off. Bluebirds seem to be on the timid side, and you are so right Kay about the female being picky about where she nests.......Maryl

Maryl, I have no idea why this spot is so popular with them. They make their nests entirely of pine straw, and even though mockingbirds build nests in trees, one will occasionally try to harrass the bluebirds but they have always "stood their ground" at this box. My oldest grandson built a box while he was in school and we have occasionally had bluebirds in both boxes. There are guards for the boxes to prohibit larger birds, but I don't know that you could prevent sparrows from nesting there.

You are so lucky to have the bluebirds. I saw several around here last year, but I haven't seen any this year.

Debra, I used to get excited when I saw bluebirds in the neighborhood and read a little about them. I was advised to get the plain nesting box like you see here and they mo ed into almost immediately and have been adding to their population ever sine. They seem to prefer simple over decorative huses but they will nest in a blue one.

I have never seen a bluebird here. what a nice bit of nature in your yard.

We, and ever had them in our yard until I put up the bird house.. We got our fist nestlings that year and it continues every year. I believe several bluebird couples use the box. I am going to have to replace the second box since weather is hard on the boxes.
