Kitchen Remodeling Advice - Layout, Open Shelving, Sinks

Hi! We are planning a kitchen remodel and would love some input on a couple of things.

Here are photos of the existing kitchen and layout

Some notes on the existing kitchen

  • Current sink is only 21 inches wide
  • Current space for fridge is 34” and can only accommodate a 30” fridge
  • We are in talks with contractors to relocate the water heater and W/D to reclaim space for the kitchen
  • The corner to the left of the range is 41.5”, which is not long enough for most blind corner solutions (I think?). We are willing to close up the window on the range side in order to scooch things to accommodate more functional corner storage. (We would also like to add a skylight to compensate for the lost window)

Desires

  • Larger work station sink (30" or 33")?
  • Space for at least a 36” fridge
  • Functional corner storage (lemans, lazy susan, ANYTHING other than just a blind corner)
  • Like the open look of no uppers if we can get away with the reduction in storage

We've brainstormed two potential reconfigurations -- both of which move the diswasher to the "island" side to make room for a larger sink + move the fridge to the old W/D section.

Option 1: 48"x48" corner pantry

Is the corner pantry super dated and an inefficient use of space? I’m kind of drawn to having floor to wall storage for bulk item purchases and an area to hide a microwave and other appliances, but don’t love how much it sticks out in the rendering.

Option 2: corner cabinet/counter

Questions

1. Re: layout

a) Does it make sense to move the dishwasher to the left side of the sink, or will I end up hating the water that drips across the floor every time I transfer dishes from the sink to the dishwasher? I'm tempted because I think it would let me fit a larger sink.

b) Does it make sense to move the fridge to the built in wall?

c) Is there a better layout of appliances for streamlined work flow?

2. Re: sink

a) Folks who have work station sinks: do you actualy use the accessories? Would you buy a work station sink again, or would you just buy a regular sink

b) I’m tempted to buy a big ass work station sink, like 56 inches, so that I can put the drying rack accessory on half of it and use it as a built-in dish rack instead of a counter dish rack. Is that way too big of a sink lol?

3. Re: open shelving

I used to poo poo open shelving because it just seems like a grease magnet, but I like the open look of no uppers. If we were to do open shelving we'd keep our everyday plates, bowls, glasses, etc. on them since I've heard that regularly used items don't end up collecting much dust or grease.

For those of you who have open shelving, what's your experience? I'd love to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly. Do you regret it, or would you do it again?

Thanks in advance for your time and insight!

Great project! i had open shelving in a tiny kitchen for about 5 years - it held our daily used items and everything had to be rinsed before use and about every 2 weeks everything had to come off to wipe down the shelving - they were not easy to live with. we eventually moved our kitchen with a big reno and i got all glass front uppers, i was SO happy to get rid of those open shelves. i have watched that Insta trend with some disbelief given my experience..

we have a large 48” workstation sink with 2 faucets - LOVE the size and the utility of 2 faucets (we dont have not prep sink) - we use the cutting board, but none of the other accessories (ours didnt really come with a lot of them) - FWIW i love the size of our sink but will say i just went with a standard 30” undermount for a recent vacation build and its also great — people have strong feelings re:workstation sinks on here….😅

. Corner pantries are just not good ever. I am not sure what you are showing in the 3D plans but here a to scale floor plan of the space with nothing in it is what we use to plan kitchens. Workstaion sinks IMO are just silly . A good cutting board a good single bowl sink and 24 " is plenty with a DW ONce you have the goofy little things with a work staion you only have 1/2 sink. I like true pullot pantries and usually best on the wall with the fridge . All drawers for base cabinets can store even all your everyday dishes and glassware , large ones do pots and pans just so much better storage than regular cabinets . I love no uppers if possible the look is clean and makes a small space feel bigger. Simple stainless hood for the range also for small space .I never like to pass the range on my way from fridge to sink so always plan sink and fridge close together . My advice use your DW for almost everything lad it up run it even 1/2 load uses less water than hand washing so honesty alittle rollup mat for the few things you need to hand wash is all you need stored under the sink. You have what look like a small space do not waste it with a huge useless sink, not to mention trying to keep a big sink clean all the time and those grids for the bottom get gross and one more thing to clean .So please post the to scale plan and mark with an X anything that cannot be moved . You will get great help here often from actual KDs for free. Is this a condo ? Just asking since you have W/D in the space .

I would not sacrifice a window for a skylight, Factor in more lighting.

No to open shelves. Deep base cabinet drawers rather than cabinets. Get the refrigerator within the triangle. Do you need a counter to sit up to? Spin the island work unit with the kitchen run.

    General thoughts:

    * That is a lot of open shelving to keep looking good.

    * Losing the second window will make a big impact, probably negatively. Is it possible to add windows back, maybe on either side of the range?

    * It may be better to consider an island vs peninsula, it would allow you to push the dishwasher down instead of turning it into the peninsula. An island only works if the water heater and closet are reduced or eliminated.

    * the back wall needs to be reworked but not sure how, neither the cornor pantry nor the deeply set cabinets work well

    eta:

Your current sink base appears to be big enough for a larger sink, possibly 30"? If you want to keep a penisual then the current layout is pretty ideal. If you move the window on the range wall or remove the hot water heater then you will have room for a bigger fridge and could do an enitire wall of caibent pantries or a walled in pantry.

as far as a huge sink goes, how do you plan to wash in it? Is it a single bowl, if so do you ever plan to fill it? that will take a lot of water.

I have some floating shelves in a coffee / wine bar area, between two upper cabinets. (see pic) It's far enough away from the range that it doesn't get grease, ever. But the shelves do get dusty. I'd still do it again (in that location), BUT I would add lights under the bottom shelf. When my under cabinet lights are on, the bar sink still stays unlit because there are no lights under the floating shelves. When the walls were open and they were running wire, they could have run wire to give me a light under that bottom shelf, but I didn't think of it. I keep a cordless / rechargeable light on that counter now just on the off chance (ha ha) I want to open a bottle of wine at night.

In my main kitchen and next to my range, I wouldn't want open shelves. But if you're sold on the idea, just consider trying to get some kind of under shelf lighting so your counters can be lit at night. (Old pic; I have stuff on the top shelf now and a sleeker coffee maker. And perhaps a few more bottles of wine. But you get the idea.)

@chispa - that is a great idea! I am back focusing on my kitchen renovation. I currently have a 33" sink base - I like using the 48" one with the 18" drainboard sitting over the dishwasher.

Do you mind adding a photo of the completed dishwasher? What brand dishwasher do you have? Thank you!

I much prefer the layout without the corner pantry. I don't like how it crowds the room and eliminates counter space.

If you're doing a peninsula, consider flipping a cabinet to open toward the open space rather than having to deal with a blind corner cabinet that opens into the kitchen. The blue square below is what I'm talking about. You could store infrequently used items like platters, or things like table linens if you have a dining table nearby, or anything that you might use in the adjoining space.

Check your refrigerator specs for clearances, no matter where you place it. Be sure you have enough room to open the doors fully. And in this rendering, it does not look like you have enough room to open the doors and let anyone else pass in or out of the kitchen.

An overhead 2D layout with all measurements shown would help others help you.

@dani_m08, thanks! I'm really happy with the setup. I have a Miele dishwasher. It wasn't the top model, but one below it, back in 2022.

    Completed dishwasher.

Here you can see the drainboard and how the dishwasher was lowered as far as possible to clear the drainboard.

Door panel was mounted higher on the DW door to make up the difference.

You don't notice this gap unless you are kneeling down and looking up into the DW.

Cut out in toe-kick panel to allow dishwasher door enough space to swing down freely.

Not visible unless you get down on the floor.

Sorry for delayed response and sorry for the lack of professional drawings. Thank you all for the feedback and insight -- will take some time to let it marinate before responding, but wanted to say thank you!
