Heavy on the Emmerichs

I've been really pleased with most of the Karol Emmerich cultivars this season. Many are performing better here than in Nashville, although some are still short. All three of her eyed cultivars that I grow have instant rebloom.

Magnify the Lord has one instant rebloom scape. It rebloomed only once out the four years that I grew it in Nashville. It had bud counts in the high teens (17-18) this season, higher than it ever had in Nashville (15).


Light of the World never rebloomed for me in TN, but it has two instant rebloom scapes now.Original scapes had more buds (16-17) than I ever saw in Nashville.


Open Door has two instant rebloom scapes. It has had more rebloom some years in Nashville and higher bud counts there. With the rebloom scapes (that i didn't notice till today), it has bloomed for more than four weeks.



Linda Beck X All Things to All Men - Seedlings like this are why I can't part with Emmerich's All Things despite its splotchy nature. This seedling didn't bloom last year, and this Spring got mowed down by my lawn guys. It's short and has only a few buds, but I'm just thrilled to see its pretty face again. I've crossed it with some taller, better budded purples with more dormancy.


Soli deo Gloria - I have a love/hate relationship with this Emmerich. I love its face more any of her other purples, but it doesn't want to multiply for me, has short scapes again and few buds. But that doesn't stop me from wanting to cross it with more vigorous purples.

Victorian Garden Emerald Breeze is putting on magnificent clump shows every day this week. It will make my list of Bud Kings this year.


There's A Place - I rebought this one and planted it last fall. It's short this season, but I hope for longer legs next year.

    My relationship with Soli came to an end this year. It never multiplied past the original two fans, sent up one scape last year with three buds and did not show up at all this spring. It will not be missed.

    Victorian Garden Emerald Breeze is wonderful!! A yellow, you know! The Linda Beck seedling looks so pretty. There’s A Place is such a pretty lavender.

    Kate - Soli is just not a strong grower. I understand your sentiments about its demise. VG Emerald Breeze spent several years in Nashville at four fans because grubs decimated any new growth. Here it multiplies like crazy and has buds in the 20s. Let me know if you ever want some of it.

    There's a Place is a new favorite of mine. It added a few inches here, like many cultivars this year. Scintillating colors. Yes, I don't recall Light of W ever having rebloom. We need rain if there is going to be rebloom.

    You know I like the yellow Victorian, and Crazy Kate catches my eye. I like the color on your Royal Invitation. I just wish I could do justice to the lavender shades here. I'd try that one if I thought it would look like yours................Maryl

    Maryl - You are right about lavenders not holding their color in high heat. They do not look good one the temps climb up high in the 90s.


    Mantis - I'm glad you are liking There's a Place. It's not one of the more vigorous Hansons, but it's hard to beat the color.

    Beautiful grouping of blooms. I am a fan of Emmerichs daylilies but some just don't do well no matter what we try. Too bad about Soli deo Gloria as I really am taken with the color and form.

    The Soli seedling is so pretty. I am having a hard time understanding why such a poor performer is used to hybridize. Are you concerned the poor performance remains in most seedlings??? I see it got an honorable mention in 2015. If Kate can’t grow it I wonder if anyone has success.

    Julia - It is too bad about Soli. I was hoping it would do better here, and it may eventually.

    Sherry - I don't have a Soli seedling yet. The seedling above is out of All Things to All Men, a different Emmerich. Soli has produced several top performers for Emmerich, including Blood of the Martyrs, the top budded and branched cultivar in my garden this year. In fact, BOTM is the child of two Soli seedlings crossed together. So you see, it can yield a child that is a super performer. Hybridizers cross cultivars that have traits they want. Soli has incredible parentage, so the genetics alone make it desirable for hybridizing. It also has a color that is closer to true purple than any daylily I know. That makes it super valuable to a hybridizer. While the majority of the seedlings would have poor performance, hybridizers aim to produce just one magnificent seedling. That's why the professionals do long crosses with 60-100 seeds from one cross. They're playing the long game. Also, not everyone has had the problems Kate and I have had with Soli. Nancy in Kentucky had a pretty good clump going until crown rot showed up in the whole bed next to her driveway. It could be Soli was not getting enough coldness for me in TN or Kate in MS. I think Mantis has had better results with it than we did. As for All Things, again Emmerich has many, many good registrations out of its kids. While All Things is splotchy, most of the kids are not. Same thing with Skin of My Teeth, which was always splotchy for me and that I did not bring to Indy. The kids, including Leonard, have clean blooms or, at least, not continually splotchy flowers.

    Debra, thanks for taking the time to explain things. Looks like one has to be dedicated to find the perfect plant. So much hard work and record keeping involved. I guess you have to love the process.
