Not this exact one, but some years ago we had an inconveniently located young elm tree cut down and this year it was festooned with 7 or 8 large yellow flat growths all over the sides of the stump, each much larger than my hand. I had never seen this type, looked it up (and have already forgotten what it was... lol) and left them alone. Mother nature recycling again!

Fungi are infinitely interesting and amazingly beautiful. I'd love a really large book with color photos of specimens from around the whole planet... =)

Yes new mulch for me has always brought some interesting fungi. Many weird looking specimens have ‘erected’ from it lol. Dog vomit included….

Thanks for all that info. I would never eat any mushroom growing outdoors. My yard or the wild, because unless it was a mushroom expert telling me it was good to eat, I wouldn't risk it. We were just leaving it there long enough to take a photo. Definitely not letting the puppy dog go near it. We usually get a few mushrooms every year, but never something that looked like that. Just the usual small mushroom looking mushrooms. Very funny!

Yes, as Gardengal stated, it's a harmless puffball mushroom ... we once found a whopping 22 pounder growing on our property, I do have a photo tucked away in some box!

Puffballs are edible if they're still white inside.
