Cooler Temps Bring Out Darker, Richer Colors

last month
last modified: last month

The cooldown is here and skies are clear today. Hooray! I was surprised by how much darker the bloom colors were this morning.

Electric Ladyland - This one has looked pink to me since it started blooming. But today it was the darker rose red color that Hanson registered.

The Color of Wonderful rebloom with its most intense color of the season.

BQ Dud X Sweet Child of Mine -New seedling that I've been trying to photograph for weeks. Early blooms had bug damage and more recent blooms had lighter color that couldn't be photographed in bright sun. This is a rebloom scape. (The BQ Dud was the only Bubblequeen seedling that I didn't care for, although it had tremendous branching and budding in it's first year to bloom.) The original scape had 16 buds. The rebloom scape has about 10. Color is orchid lavender with a bluish lavender watermark.

Freedom of Expression X Violet Sabrewing #4 - This one bloomed as a late this season. In Nashville it bloomed ML.

Sweeten Creek put up some late scapes, so it is blooming now. It has not performed as well as my other yellows, but it is planted in bad place where it gets shaded out by vigorous UFs. Maybe I will be able to move it this fall, but I doubt it.

Doctor Handsome and Mister Mayor - Mister Mayor has a rebloom scape for the first time ever! Yay!

John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt's last bloom. Nancy, tell your daughter this one performed well for me this season. I look forward to seeing how it does next year.

Tahlequah Flame is performing so much better here than in Nashville. I'm really loving it this season!

Fear Not is still blooming away. The foliage looks ratty now, but the flowers are pretty. I like how the flowers are usually bitone and how it sets pods in the hottest temps. I want to cross it next year with some bicolors.

Fear Not duo - Thanks so much for this one, Nancy!

We dropped down from 104 yesterday to 91 today (but back up to over a 100 by Friday). I'll take this brief cool down. Have an infestation of spider mites on some of my daylilies and need it to be under 90 when I spray tonight.........Fear Not colors just sing in your cool spell and the Color of Wonderful looks really pink. Sweeten Creek always rebloomed for me too when I grew it. Not the usual thing for most of my daylilies.........Maryl

ELECTRIC LADYLAND and THE COLOR OF WONDERFUL look fantastic. FEAR NOT looks really good. Yes, I too like the bicolor look of FEAR NOT.

Maryl - Ninety-one doesn't sound like much of a cool down, but compared to 104 it is! I get highs in the 70s today and tomorrow, and then highs in the low to mid 80 for two days after that.

Isn't it amazing how the cooler temps seem to make the blooms deepen in color. Tahlequah Flame and Electric Ladyland are ones I would pick.. Low 80s and lower humidty today but I'll take it over the 90s or Maryl 100. We are going to go back up so i'm trying to get as much outdoor work done in the next couple of days. Enjoy the cool spell.

Your temps sound wonderful. We are still under a heat warning with heat index temps in triple digits. The Color of Wonderful has really pretty deep color. You got first rebloom ever on Mister Mayor and I have first season never to have a rebloom on it!

Julia - The colors on both Electric Ladyland and Tahlequah Flame are bright and have carrying power. Like you, I am trying to get some weeding and bed expansion done during these few cool days..

Kate - So sorry you missed out on rebloom this time. I know Mister Mayor always rebloomed for Nancy in KY, I didn't realize it always rebloomed for you - until this year.
