THe space you show looks like a DR. What do you need in the office for daily use ? How often do you have guests? I have often put the home office in the closet in this situation and a good quality sofa bed for guests. This is small space so every inch counts . I do not like my home office to open to guests so I need a bit info about the guests. A to scale floor plan with all windows , doorways marked Also every measurement clearly marked . The post here in jpeg format in a comment . Give us as much info as possible about both the office and the guests too

I keep it tidy so I don’t mind if guests see the space. Currently used as a DR but having an addition done which will accommodate kitchen and dining room. This would only be used for guests in very rare circumstances when other space not available…I’m wondering about possible layout of a desk and a smaller scale sofa which would be only items needed, and maybe some kind of nice file cabinet, would not be much else in space. FP keep it or seal up? Beginning stages, thinking out loud and would like to hear ideas. Thank You

Murphy beds are nice, in theory - but, imo, in reality, not so much; unless you have a big space to work with... and I mean really big. Other than that, they are at best cumbersome, having to pull the bed down and put it back up. Also, it’s a huge hassle to have to potentially move furniture, etc. to pull the bed down. I had one in my very first place; an apt, in Los Angeles. Never again.

Thanks- I agree no Murphy bed- space too tight. I like the idea of a sofa across from desk and the desk will be slight, not cumbersome so I can pull it back out of way easily if needed, feel sofa pullout will rarely be used for guest sleeping

^^ Much better. Plus, you will have the daily use of the sofa for comfortable seating in your office. A win-win.

In my apt, that I mentioned, I had a full-sized sofa and coffee table; the space was not particularly small. In fact, it was fairly spacious. There was plenty of room to pull the Murphy bed down, and even room to walk around the bed when it was down. But it was just a hassle to have to pull it down and lift it back up. And I know that for tight spaces, the Murphy is a potential nightmare.

I would leave FP for sure . I agree the space is too small for a muphy when only need is for the occassional guest.

What a charming little room! Absolutely, do not remove any of the original woodwork. That chimney closet is delightful! Isn't it sometimes called the "minister's closet" for spirits, etc. for guests? You're very fortunate to have such a gorgeous, old room/house.

A good quality sleep sofa works for my guests. How long do you want them to stay anyway?

I would forget the Murphy bed and just get a couch that could be made into a bed, if needed. Leave the fireplace. It is part of the character of your home, and needs to stay.

I like the idea of wallpaper above the chair rail, and my husband can add millwork below chair rail….any thoughts on that?

A number of wallpaper vendor sites have a visualizer tool; so you can upload your room pics, and get an idea of how various wallpapers might look in your space.

I put together a couple of renderings. Unfortunately, AI refused to paper the whole room. Also, I think the end table and lamp might be better on the other side of the sofa.

I am also not sure if I have the room layout right. I only skimmed through your pics.

Btw, another option could be to create a wallpaper effect by using paint and stencil(s). Easier to change when/if you want another look. Etsy.com has a plethora of stencil options.

The pictures are hard to tell exactly how much space you have so this layout may or may not work. I like a few traditional pieces mixed with more contemporary pieces so it doesn’t look too heavy.

I am researching murals for my dining room so i have them on my mind but i think your beautiful historic room with lush blue/green trim work lends itself beautifully to a mural!

Love this idea of a mural, hadn’t thought of it! Does a painter do that or is it wallpaper? We live on the beach road so maybe a coastal scene would work? I do like the idea of where you placed sofa and desk. I had thought of sofa on wall opposite the FP- sofa facing fireplace and my desk/chair where you have it but pushed back a bit closer to wall?

I have been researching a wallpaper version but if I were an artist, a hand painted one is more appropriate historically. I have not looked into pricing a local artist cost wise yet.
