I think mixing the pillows up a bit helps. In my opinion, it’s the matching pillows that can push it over the top...

Although, matching does work; and it really depends on the personal preference, the setting, the desired vibe, etc. But if you want a more relaxed feel - plus, visual interest - mixing up the pillows is simple and impactful.

I might change out one more of the pillows in grouping directly above; break up the line of soldiers. ;)

they don't need to match, but compliment each other. Same Style Different fabrics, all leather but different styles... depends on the other things in the room, the rug, etc.

Agree with Lyn. Chairs don't need to match as long as they compliment each other.

Thank you all for commenting. I’m thinking similar style chairs, two in a print, two in a solid that ties into the print. Maybe also use piping to tie them together. The attached photo is the curtain fabric.

Erica, I think your plan for two and two is a good idea. I don’t like 4 matching chairs either. We picked 2 of the same wood chairs with different cushions, and two white chairs in curved but complementary shapes. Also, the center is asymmetrical with the two different wood tables, and the side tables for the chairs are also different. I think it’s a little more fun than a matching set

I love this! The chairs and the tables are so cool. Also love all the instruments in their cubbies.

This looks so cozy and inviting. I just keep wondering why four identical chairs is so popular when there are ways to mix it up.

Because most people would not do a good job of mixing it up, so easier to have them match.

Your room sounds like a lovely, analog getaway! Why not use two sets of two chairs? Mix it up for fun! The chairs just need to be complementary in size/scale, color, style, and pattern.
