What to Wear: August 2026

last modified: 7 days ago

Hard to believe it’s already August. Before you know it some nincompoop is going to be using the C word! (Raises hand, waves it about wildly) You know what I miss sbout August? Back to school shopping with the kids. The school supplies, the boxes of tissues for the teachers, the backpacks, the shoes and clothes and sweaters and the fashion show when we got home from the exhausting mall trip. Online shopping is just not the same… DD says it’s better but I am not convinced .

Maybe this month and next can be our virtual ”back to school” fashion show!

My DD and I have the same glasses frames. When we bought them, she always wore her contacts. We thought we would never end up at the same place at the same time both wearing our glasses. HA! We are often together both of us in our glasses. Sometimes people comment. We laugh.

I am struggling with what to wear to a birthday dinner tonight-- and hoping to get your input and opinions. It is casual but upper end casual. This particular restaurant you will see anywhere from jeans and casual tops to work attire to dressier dresses. I was planning to wear a linen dress but it is going to rain/storm and I am not feeling it anymore. Problem is, a lot of my clothes just dont fit well so I dont have a lot to choose from. Tried on so many tops and added plenty to the donation pile.

The other 2 women are likely wear jeans and a nice top... one may wear a casual dress. I am considering this top with jeans ... it is also too big by 2 sizes but I think it actually looks better larger.. It hangs well and will be comfy in our 90 degree temps and humidity because it hangs loose.

Would you wear this (with jewelry) and nicer jeans ... or should I suck it up and go with the linen dress? Did I mention I'd need to iron it :(

Funky, I think the top would be pretty with darker jeans. For some reason I think darker looks dressier.

@Funkyart yes absolutely I'd wear that top and jeans to upper end casual. I'd go for dark or even black jeans to make it more dressy if necessary.

@Kswl love the green skirt and sweater, though the sweater doesn't seem fancy enough for "cocktail attire" wedding. Also love the dress.

I am definitely wearing this Maggy London dress to the daytime August wedding in Austin. I'm trying to decide between shoes. The dress is darker than the picture, almost navy. The toe strap of shoe 1 is a little tight. Heel height seems to be about the same between shoe 1 and shoe 2. I didn't like the visual heaviness of a black heel. I need to find a small silver wristlet purse I have in a box somewhere around here. I will be very minimally accessorized (probably just simple silver hoops) with minimal makeup (mascara + lip tint) and simple hair.

Just in case anyone runs into this challenge, I needed a straight strap bra for the back of the dress, but the front cuts in a little so my bra straps would occasionally show. I bought these from A*zn and it really works to hold the front straps in just a little bit! It's odd that this dress doesn't have bra strap loops.

@Funkyart Love the white top but if you have darker jeans or black pants (even Spanx) it would be great . Relax & have fun!

Thanks all!!... yes, I will wear darker jeans. I do have black spanx but they are heavier -- too heavy for 90 deg/humid weather. I do have a pair of cotton EF side zip pants that might work but they have a wide-ish leg so I'll have to try them and see if I look like a bag lady in loose top and wide legs.

I appreciate the input -- for the past few weeks, I have had some anxiety over dressing. I am in a phase I am feeling a bit like a troll lol ... and also my options are dwindling as I lose weight and try them. I really dislike seeing looking like I am swimming in an outfit as much as I dislike one that is clearly too small.

ETA Pricklypear, I love that dress! It will look spectacular on you ... I also like the shoes with the thinner straps (#2) and bonus that they don't pinch anywhere!

    Love the white top, Funky!

”Jeans and a nice top” = my uniform for these occasions.

Today we visited The Blue Garden in Newport (will post garden pics separately) and had to share the tour guide’s outfit. Blue and white dress, blue hat, blue glasses, even a blue phone case!

@Sueb20, that looks like exactly what I’ve been looking for. I can see it for a minute and then there is a pop-up that I cannot get rid of! I’ve tried 3 times. My frustration runneth over!!!

@bbstx looks like the words in the popup are the same color as the background. Hover mouse over top right (I think in light tan area) and click. It should close popup and get you back to product. Hope that helps.

Companies are using AI to generate their code and it stinks. And because their developers didn't write the code, they don't know how to fix it. Or don't care. It's beyond frustrating and as a former developer it makes me angry!

Funny! Just tonight my sister gave me a Calia sweater she bought for me when she bought one for herself. She, her daughter and I actually have a lot of items the same -- clothes, purses, jewelry. We don't often buy them together but we tend to like some of the same stores, brands and designers. My gift tonight was rare-- it usually just happens.

I can't think of a single time we wore the same thing at the same time --we don't coordinate or check in. Tonight she wore a bag that I have and I wore a necklace similar to one she has from the same designer. We could have duped but didnt.

My friend was visiting me at the beach recently. We each went to get ready to go to the beach…I was looking at 2 different tankini tops, picked one, got dressed, and met her downstairs. She was wearing the same top that I did not wear. I had no idea we had the same one.

Speaking of colored jeans, I was looking at these at GH. I like the color but I think the length might be weird on me. I like the little slits at the ankle.

Can see the slits better here:

I just ordered this for our Canada trip, thinking it may be a useful layer. And this is becoming a favorite color. 🩵

Finally got past the pop-up on the Kut from Kloth site (thanks, @jsk). Love everything about the jeans except the frayed hem. I tried frayed hems a couple of years ago. Just not my style.

Found a pair of green jeans at LLBean. Perfect except sold out in all sizes but a 2. They are not expecting an imminent restock, according to the human I chatted with.

Garnet Hill has cropped, wide-legged green jeans. J. Jill has cargo (oh, yes, please, large pockets on my thighs 🙄).

Chicos has a pair that might work for me. I’m at DD’s. If they have them in stock, I can actually go try them on. The picture shows a slightly less olive green than I’m looking for but IRL might be different.

How hard could it be to find straight, full-length, denim jeans in an olive green - with a percent or 2 of stretch??

My family often shows up wearing the same thing, or DH and I will look too matchy matchy.. Someone always has to change clothes. My parents came over for Easter and brought gifts. The bag she gave my oldest was an exact match for the shirt he was wearing - a sort of seafoam/sage green gingham.

Any thoughts on these bags with the navy portrait collar gown?

I think any one of the 3 would work. The first is my least favorite, probably because the grayed-down tone of the flowers. The cranes on the 3rd bag appeal to me, but I’d need to see it IRL before making a decision. I really like the 2nd bag provided the workmanship on the beading is acceptable.

    Kswl thanked bbstx

@bbstx Thanks! Theres a very similar version to the 2nd bag on the big A site. Easy to return if I dont like it. I’m not sure about returns on the crane bag.

love the crane fabric, like clutches more than pocketbook style but it would be my choice of these.

Jury is still out on whether or not I’ll keep it. The fabric feels terrific but the rolled hems are a little fat.

Porkandham I really like the bag with

flowers; it looks to be a similar hue and somehow strikes the right note with that beautiful portrait collar. I like the white and blue and green beaded bag but it does seem very summery— and I’ve already seen someone IRL carrying that bag. Beaded bags are suddenly so ubiquitous you might actually see it or its cousin at the wedding. But even with the seasonal and popularity caveats I still like the purse with flowers best.

  • yesterday

@porkandham - love your dress and I actually like bag #1 for a September wedding. The only thing giving me pause is the bag with the silver shoes. May not be an issue but, if it is, then bag #2 is also pretty. I also think the bag should be a supporting player to your dress in this case.

In the thread about using AI for travel planning, @chinacatpeekin mentioned using it to find information about a particular article of clothing. Taking a page out of her playbook, I asked ChatGPT to identify jeans with the things that are important to me. I gave it size, color, fabric content, inseam desired, and even mentioned that the Quince Bella were too small for me. I have a whole new list of jeans to look at. Get ready, UPS!

At the other end of the fashion budget, I just got this sweater from ON and think it is great. I would say it runs a bit big. Not for those who don’t like the drop shoulder thing. For about $35 on sale, it’s a bargain.

Can everyone at least agree to bring their navy Longchamps bag?? (Wouldn’t that scarf look cute tied on the handle!)

SueB that sweater looks cozy, like a hug. Not my color but imagine it is lovely on you!!

porkandham, I LOVE the dress and shoes. My favorite bag is the last one, but they all could work. Though maybe if the shoes are silver you don't want the gold handle.

Is eld6161 the same person as elledi61 ?

I was reading along and didn't recognize an elledi ... then I thought has my mind been "reading" this name incorrectly all these years? I checked and I have messaged with eld6161 before, so I'm not hallucinating!
