ideas to update FR with sectional

I have a new sectional that I’d like to keep, and I’d also like to keep the existing rug. Everything else is open to being replaced or updated. The entertainment center is sentimental, so I’d prefer to keep it if possible, but I’m open to replacing it if that would make the room look better. I’ve also added a photo of the kitchen next to the family room for context, since I’d like the spaces to coordinate.

I’d love some ideas for updating the room and making everything feel cohesive

The black furniture is harsh looking in the room. I’d go for a wood tone media console that is similar in tone to your kitchen cabinets. An upholstered ottoman serves as the coffee table but very relaxing for people to stretch out their legs.

You could consider painting the existing console if you really wanted to keep it.

Thank you!! i’ve been on the fence about the brown and Black, the black is sentimental, but it’s prob time to go!

This is just a thought for behind the sectional in the corner. By adding a shelf under the mirror you can display a couple of things and also have a place to set a drink.

You have all reclining pieces you can't recline...too close to the wall. Remove the rug for now. It is controlling where the furniture is placed.

Have you tried positioning the three contiguous pieces of the sectional with backs to the kitchen, then adding the corner piece and the two chairs sharing the beverage feature to wrap around to the wall where the very large entertainment piece is now(not for long). Positioned correctly, all furniture could recline. What about the tv?

One option would be to install it on the lower wall of the cut-out wall as long as

the TV would be about 24 to 30 inches from the floor to the bottom of the screen. That would allow perfect eye/tv level from the sectional.

If this works for you, it will open up the room, and leave the front windows unencumbered to accommodate the one chair facing the t v.

3 of the pieces do recline, no issues. Havertys Nova sectional. there wouldn’t be enough room to put the TV on that lower wall. It would be near the floor. Thank you for the idea.

I tried to work within your requested perimeters. Clear out clutter, replace coffee table with a wood to bring in kitchen and upgrade window treatments is where I would focus to give a nice update but not a do over.

Since the sectional and rug are staying, I’d use those as the starting point and build the rest of the room around them. You don’t necessarily need to replace the sentimental entertainment center either - it may just need the right surrounding pieces and styling to feel more integrated.

I’d pull one or two tones from the rug and repeat them subtly through pillows, window treatments, artwork and accessories. Since the kitchen is visible from the family room, repeating one of its finishes or wood tones in the living area will also help the two spaces feel connected.

At Avenue Design, we often approach open spaces this way - starting with the pieces that need to stay and then layering in complementary furniture, lighting and finishes to make the entire space feel intentional.

I’ve updated the entertainment center. Ideas for a coffee table? Does it need to be round?

Rectangular like you have now if a good shape just change to a wood that works with you new console or an upholstered one. The console looks really good.
