    Who?

All I can find is a bald eagle named Jackie at the Ojai Raptor Center' who died today.

i'm glad she is finally at peace. she never would have recovered enough to be returned to the wild and life for her in captivity would have been cruel.

I'm so sad about this. I never watched the cam, but I used to watch our local eagle cam. Our female was named Liberty, and she was a beauty too, but watching cams is something I never do anymore because I can't stand the grief of loving a creature and sometimes seeing it die in real time. That happened on an osprey cam in Maine that I loved, and it was preyed on by nearby owls, killing the osprey babies and injuring the mother, and I saw it happen.

I've watched her last two clutches. She had followers from around the world. The day she went into Ojai Raptor Center's care, they received $250,000 in donations. By now, they have probably received millions, so other raptors will be saved because of Jackie . The only consolation is that she was receiving help rather than dying over several days in the wild. I wonder if Shadow will reuse the nest this winter. I believe he will.

eagles are very territorial. i expect that when shadow's hormones kick in this winter, he will find a new mate and they will likely reuse the nest.

I read about how she was attacked by a couple of juvenile eagles and found it very sad. It didn’t sound like she was in very good shape with other maladies resulting from of the attack even after a week or so of treatment. She just couldn't overcome or maybe they humanely put her down. I’ve been casually watching that nest for a few years.

I had been watching one for quite a while at Berry College in north Georgia. They had several different cameras and had a female for years that had obviously had some foot/leg injury but they were the best pair. Then one year she didn’t return. There were several reported sightings in other nearby areas and even beyond, but no one knows what happened to her.

A different pair took over the nest the next year. I think that was 2024. Since then the eaglets have had it rough, with several eggs being non-viable, some dying in a few days or weeks. One fell out of the nest. It just wasn’t good going back and finding what happened after a few days. The eagles appeared to return last year (Around Dec 2025) but no eggs were laid.

maybe they humanely put her down

according to the hospital where she was being treated, she was getting "around the clock care". if she was being monitored 24/7, i suspect the doctors probably saw the end coming and mercifully euthanized her. at least, i would like to think that's how the end was. judging by the thousands of comments on facebook, this is something they would probably never admit to. there were so many unknowledgeable people giving so many far fetched ideas to get her well, the flack they would take by admitting this course of action would have been epic.

there were hundreds of people asking why they couldn't put her back in the nest to die and let shadow "see her one last time". others wanted to know why they wouldn't capture shadow and bring him to the hospital to say goodbye to her.

I wasn't an avid watcher, but I have been sad about her death. I tuned in when the eggs were laid and the eaglets fledged. FOBBV's website gives an interesting history of Jackie. I wondered how they knew her DOB and found out that they think she was born in the nest that she then took over as hers four years later.
