How long to wait before staining new stairs

We just had to have our stairs repaired due to some rot. How long is it recommended to wait before staining them? Stair guy said several months.

You're after wood moisture content (15%), not any particular time. If your wood is KDAT (Kiln Dried After Treatment), you're probably good to go now.

If you're in a 4 season area, no way would I be staining in February.

Thanks Joe. It is just regular pressure treated. I am in NC. Will a moisture meter used for firewood work to check moisture content? I know with firewood you need to split it first and measure the moisture content in the center. Obviously I am not going to split the wood stairs. Will the pins go in deep enough to get a good idea of moisture content?
