it doesn't have to be a continuous length of carpet. The landing can be a separate piece.

Context is key as you can truthfully do whatever you like but pictures would help us help you.

It depends on the pattern of the carpet. Keep in mind that the pattern will change direction at landings. I like to leave landings wood if the pattern is an issue.

Can you show the stairs and the landing? It's possible to do either just the stairs with the runner, or continue the carpeting on the landing. The devil is in the details--how big is the landing? what is the pattern of the carpet, if any? In either case, make sure you have a highly qualified installer, or it could look all wrong. The photo above is not what I would choose--the stair runners are much too wide, and the landing carpet looks disjointed.

Are you sure there is hardwood under that carpet? It's usually ply....

If you plan to install wood treads and landing I vote no to carpet on the landings.

The idea Lyn shows might work IMO if the stairs are hardwood I would do a narrower runner and nothing on the landings to match the top and bottom of the staircase .

I like Lyn Neilson's idea of individual pieces on stairs. Might prevent less of a tripping hazard. If you were to do something like this I wouldn't apply to the landing.
