A Room without a Cause

last month

This room has become a place of collectibles but we would like it to be a source of seated comfort - any thoughts?

You need to figure out what you're going to do with all that stuff. And plants. And how to train people not to leave their shoes lying around haphazardly. That is all the hardest part. Decide what to toss and what to keep, where to keep it, and go from there.

looks like a great spot for cocktails and conversation. LOVE all the plants!

Get a large area rug and four matching swivel chairs for the center of the room.

Colorful or Neutral, Express your own style.

So much can be done to that room....

Want to keep plants and wine cabinet but all else can be released.

If you're keeping the wine cabinet, then it's the perfect place for 2 chairs and a small cocktail table for a glass of wine before or after dinner.

Is there room for a shoe cabinet somewhere near the entry?

If keeping all the plants I'd find a more attractive way to display them. Possibly all the same color pot - because there are so many I think you need some unification. And some attractive shelves'

Without dimensions, your seating needs and only knowing you are keeping the plants and wine cabinet: start with their placement.

Consider editing some plants to create a more unified/attractive set up in corner by window.

The best place for the wine cabinet might be across this corner.

Now measure the space, define seating and suggest a rug to ground/balance/create a cozy feel. Lighting, art, and a small table(s) can come last.

How many people do you want to seat? Room size? Day or night time use, or both?

What does seated comfort mean to you - recliners? wing chair and a footstool? swivel tub chair?

The room dimensions are 11x 11. Would love feed back on accent colors other than cream/beige as the house has much of those colors. What might accent well with hues of blue and gray. Also, chair types for good conversations and reading. Ottoman vs coffee table?

I have to agree the plants are a bit too many in one space , the wine cabinets I guess but you will need to go to smaller scaled chairs and maybe nice swivel ones could work with a coffee table some lighting and maybe some nice art on the walls . Could be a nice spot. As for an ottoman I would not do one in place of a coffee tale for sure At least look at some plant stands that can accomodate several plants in front of the windows , the wine rack over by the stairs . A nice shade of grayed green would be a nice wall color

I was thinking 4 chairs when I saw your space. I didn’t know that you wanted to keep the plants. I will look on Etsy for some ideas for that. Amazon has a lot of brilliant things, always.

    Here is a simple approach:

Maybe you could put your plants on a long bench in front of the windows. Maybe a bit slimmer bench than this, if possible, to leave more free space in the room.

I understand your dilemma. It's hard to get away from cream/off-white. What's the light like in that room? The exposure? I have a similar room painted linen and cream with various accent colors (I'm still playing with these). It's a nondigital escape with a setee and swivel chairs, books, a small piano, etc.---it's a small, more feminine space away from the rest of the house/family. I love the family photo; it makes the room intimate, personal.

Since you love the plants and they will stay why not start with them. Give the room a solarium vibe, invest in a great shelving system that shows them off. Then see what footage you have for the size chairs...

The first step is to figure out what an 11x11 room can accommodate and without doing a to scale floor plan seating will be difficult to decide on/chairs’ dimensions are key - I don’t think 4 comfortable chairs will fit/be that practical, but you’ll know when you plan out the room and define your priorities. I think good lighting for reading and small side tables will be important.

I think you would comfortably have room for two chairs and a small coffee table. A set-up like Maureen posted above would be nice. You want more comfortable chairs if you plan on reading in the room, along with some lighting. Your floors and walls appear to be gray. Your plants are a cool green. You may want to bring some warmer colors into the space-rust, yellow, orange, etc. What colors do you have as accents in the rest of the house? What colors are you drawn to?

I’d definitely move away from more cream and beige if you already have a lot of that throughout the house. With the blue and gray you mentioned, I’d bring in a deeper accent color and some warmer wood or textured elements so the room doesn’t end up feeling too cool.

For an 11 x 11 room meant for conversation and reading, I like the idea of creating one intentional seating group rather than filling the perimeter with furniture. I’d also choose a coffee table over a large ottoman here — visually it would keep the center of a relatively small room a little lighter.

Since you’re essentially starting fresh with this room, I have a video where I took one living room and transformed it in four completely different directions. It shows how much the character of the same space can change through furniture, color, lighting and a few key design choices, so it might give you some ideas for the direction you want to take yours:

We have a ”room without a cause”, so I am feeling this thread! You want it to be a comfortable sitting room. Do you need such a room? Do you actually sit with a drink before dinner? Do you entertain? Is this room convenient to anything else you do in the house?

My suggestion is, name the room. Call it the sitting room, or the bar. Then design it as such. With all the plants, perhaps you have a 70s-throwback fern bar! Cozy, for sitting or even having a glass of wine after dinner. Or is it your library? For what kinds of books? Go with that.

Give the room an intention and the design will come.

I, too, have more plants than most people think necessary. However, I say, that unlike cats, you can't have too many plants. Yours are healthy and beautiful!!! (And as much as I do love cats, you absolutely can have too many!) I agree with getting a shelf or some shelving units for organization of the plant babies. As a potter, I also disagree with making all the pots the same-boring, and unnecessary (just my opinion of course.) On an altogether separate note, I also like your tapestry. It looks very similar to some of the art that my husband bought in Senegal.

It seems that you are getting a lot of help for planning the room. I just wanted to let you know that you are not the only person in the world who finds the houseplants add so much beauty and life to a home. Edit some of the other stuff, but keep and organize the plants! Also, I know many people who have just as many or more plants throughout their homes, and they are some of the most warm and welcoming homes and people that I know. Good luck on your journey to find the purpose for the room, and the design to follow-bpath giving good suggestions.
