Is this a solid wall? Do you read and enjoy the fireplace in this room? Is it a walk through on the way to a patio? front door? Is the high top for morning coffee?

Any plans to repaint the room?

walk through from den to kitchen and to outside patio. there are french doors right beside the closest aqua cushion.

I use the room to paint and read

the carpet looks fairly recent. Do you have hardwood underneath? If so, it would be great to remove the carpet so the flooring is the same as the other room.

I would start by a good edit. remove everything you don't need or want.

Paint the whole room, including the built in book cases and trims the same white/off white gray tone of the carpet if you must keep it. It will brighten up the space and make the brick fireplace a real feature.

A big declutter for sure and there are some great indoor/ outdoor fabrics that can be ablessing with cats.. I found leather was great with our cats along with a n excellent scratch pad but it depends on the cats I think. The space looks confused to me so what exactly is it's purpose ? I see a pub table 2 chairs not facing the FP a ton of odd pieces and too much eye clutter on the shelving.. I agree that carpet with cats not a great idea.

First question to answer is what is the room currently being used for and what is your desired use of the room? If you can pin that down that will be the first step on your roadmap of how to design the room.

I use this room to relax in. I read, mess with my phone and sometimes do my artwork. When we have company the table is used for seating and having a drink. It is something we don't have to keep. this room is

adjacent to the tv room divided by french doors. It is a hard room to figure out because it is a pathway to the screened porch. So furniture placement is tricky. Try not to look at the clutter because that will go :) I am just trying to figure placement, with new swivel chairs and such.

Can you post a floor plan with dimensions (all wall segments, doors, windows)? You're right that all the doors and traffic lanes make furnishing a challenge. A plan will help us see what might work.

Two squares equal a foot. Sofa shown is 3'x6', chairs 3'x3'; you could choose more lightly-scaled pieces. Chairs can swivel to enjoy the fireplace. Existing storage piece stays (for art supplies?)

I’d be inclined to really establish the room as your reading and art room. A pair of comfortable chairs and a table with a good lamp in that lower left area. A substantial desk a few feet in front of the fireplace, with a good desk chair - either parallel to the fireplace (your back to the fireplace) or on an angle. Keep the pretty bureau and mirror, edit out the table and the stools. The room’s purpose and identity would be clear - and so would the pathways to the kitchen and patio doors.
