what a beautiful room! I can see why it is the most used room in your home!
What may be bothering you is that everything is sort of in the same medium colour tones. You have the right idea with your small hits of red. I would just go with bigger hits of red; or add some bright yellow, or orange.
Also, I would find some artwork for above the fireplace that is about twice as high as the one you have now--with lots of colour in it. Then, I would pick out some of those colours for a large area rug in front of the fireplace; and choose some of those same colours for larger pillows, floor cushions, and throws.
Can you remove the artwork above the arch opening--it looks a little lost up there.
Is the furniture new--or replaceable? A bright red chair or 2, or sofa. would really punch it up!
And, something about the drapes is is bothering me--can you send another photo of that window--they look a little skimpy...sorry:)

Here is a photo of the windows. They overlook the backyard/pool. You are right, the drapes are narrow. We have pleated blinds in the windows, but they are rarely used. We like looking out over the pool. Are you suggesting an area rug to start under the brown sofa?

Move your couches closer together for conversational grouping: I suggest the couch on the left be moved closer to the couch against the wall, allowing traffic to flow behind it to access adjoining rooms( never direct traffic through a conversational grouping, if you can help it, it's disruptive) other than that it's a very nice room!

Should I find a more substantial light fixture?

Can anyone watch the TV where is at? I would move the TV to the wall where the leather sofa is and place the rest of the furniture some other way, is a little difficult to see the functionality of that room, too many furniture pieces.

Yes, we can view the TV. I would not like to lose the additional seating by removing the brown sofa.

here's 1 idea for layout

I would paint the whole TV cabinet area white along with the fireplace mantle the same white as in your kitchen. I would remove the painting over the arch. I would also remove several of the throw pillows. I would also like to see if re-hanging the 3 wood plaques over the sofa in a stacked horizontal position looked better with the sofa centered on that wall?

I would suggest to remove the painting over the fireplace and have your tv mounted there also move furniture inward to take up some floor space.

Sorry no it's not looking good. The room is too cluttered and there's no walking space in that archway. The pieces on the mantel are too large and speaking volumes. The collections of art are competing with each other. My eye keeps flickering from one place to the other. It's hard to focus in on one thing because there are way too many colour combinations that are not working. I hate to be so blunt but that's the way I see it.

I don't think the new arrangement works either it looks too cluttered as Alison Inge said above. I actually like the way you had it originally I just would have added a nice persian rug on the floor to fill that blank space. In like a pale bluey grey tone or tan. Just use the pattern of the rug to break up the expanse of plain carpet. You have some great colours in the furnishings!

working with what you have, I think the new arrangeement around the tv and fireplace is much better. Go enjoy the space with your loved ones

When I say "looking good" I meant looking a lot better that what she started with, she's on the right track, little by little moving some pieces deleting others. If it was my house I would have done something completely different but is hers and she have to work with what she has, not everyone have this great and wonderful ideas or the money to disposed of all the furniture and buy new. Im sure she'll come out with something that works for her and her family.

You are on the right track. Try tweaking the placement of your two sofas to parallel each other directly perpendicular to the fireplace. By doing this, you will have one sofa with its back to the television, which may not suit your use of this room.

Since you have such a large room, have your considered a grouping around the fireplace/television area and then a second grouping back in the corner by the windows?

Let's work on the furniture placement, then go on to the accessories after that is right.

I would remove the upper cabinetry above the tv and mount the tv to the wall. The lower cabinets would look great painted a crisp white. I would remove the artwork from above the arch, and replace the piece above the fireplace with a larger vertical piece of artwork. The wooden panels above the brown sofa is very blah. I would introduce an area rug with pops of color and a beautiful pattern. I am partial to oriental rugs which I think would work beautifully with your traditional home. Then I would select my accessories to compliment my rug. When hanging drapery panels, try to hang them above the windows to add verticality to your room and add volume to your drapes. Lighting is key so I would add beautiful lamps to my end tables. Also, I would reconfigure my furniture so that it is not lined up around the perimeter of the room. It is often a good decision to create more than one conversational area.

I failed to mention that your mantel would also look wonderful painted white. To correct a typo from my previous post... the panels are not is.

Your room is 20x20, so it could probably handle 2 ceiling fans toward each end of the room as opposed to 1 in the center. You might want to also consider white matchstick shades for your windows if you were to paint your woodwork a crisp white.

I love the 2nd rug that "fianou" posted above--something like that would really tie you room together! And you could really use the blues in it for a punch of colour.
I love the 3 wall hangings to the right of the FP!..but they need to centered above the sofa.

The second furniture arrangement by jjdesignkloos may be the most functional for you. The only thing I don't like is that the fireplace is ignored as a focal point. This is a difficult room, made more so by your need for so much seating. I might try two separate areas something like this:

Too much furniture and not enough cohesiveness. If you keep both sofas at least cover them with matching white/cream slip covers. Duplicate the pillows on each of the sofas and maintain the color scheme on the chairs. Remove the hutch above the TV or move the TV to a different wall, remove the painting above the doorway, try to pare down some of those occasional tables-the scale is off on a couple of them. There is so much going on in the room that the "wow" is difficult to locate. That is what I would do differently. The layout issue is still throwing me...

I would definitely paint your mantle and built in above your tv off white. Lots of potential!
