I fooled around with the bathroom layout a bit. Currently, your toilet area is squished into a small area, and the shower is pretty small. I enlarged both, as well as your sink area.

I also moved the primary bedroom closets to give you some visual privacy since your door opens directly into the kitchen. I bumped the one closet into the bathroom as that closet is small. I think this gives you a better space to put the bed.

Adding a garage off the laundry room will remove the windows on that wall, so I don't think that is a good idea. A separate garage will be better.

I can't read the size of the island, but you won't be seating 7 as you have drawn. You need a space at least 24" wide and 16" deep for each person. And the 24" is a not generous. As you have drawn it, the corner people would overlap.

My main comment is regarding your bedroom. I would split the large window opposite the bedroom door to be sure you have a place to put your bed without putting it under a window. Be sure to add outlets under the windows so you have a spot for nightstands and lamps. Consider an inswing or pocket door into the bathroom to save floor space in the bedroom.

Believe it or not, existing still matters even with a "gut." And "gut" has levels - can you move windows, what level of plumbing rework (like trenching a basement slab to move the stack) are you game for, etc.

What is the existing roof structure, trusses or stick framed? Do you have to live here while work progresses? Was it a 3BR you are sacrificing one for more utility function and Master ensuite? You talk of moving the stair, which has opportunity to make it more present in connecting levels, what potential does the basement have (I'd bet you're moving a bedroom down there)?

3onthetree, you hit the nail on the head. I can an will be moving windows and doors. There isn't any trenching or concrete work to be done, it's all in joist system and all of the plumbing is being re-done. Existing roof structure is 4/12 trusses. We are not living there for a year. It was indeed a 3 bedroom with all the rooms on one side making a long hallway. The basement is walkout on the back so will be putting a family room and bedroom down there, actually keeping the family room and adding a bedroom where there used to be a garage under the house.
