The kitchen is very neutral so I would say go with the colored back splash, but as the others have said definitely not both

Sorry, no you aren't on the right track. Don't want to sound mean but you shouldn't spend money on an expensive and flashy backsplash if you can't afford to re-do the countertops, etc. The tiles will only show that the counters and the rest of the kitchen don't match.

Everybody has gone backsplash crazy but you can't update a kitchen by backsplash alone. It could be part of a whole make-over but you're wasting your money to go at it by doing a BS first.

If you do decide to go ahead (which is a mistake) then you need to remove all the old backsplash and go with only one type and one color with no pattern

My advice would be to paint your whole kitchen including the cabinets. Replace the formica counters with some new formica and get new knobs for all drawers and doors..

I love the red floor.

If you are going to do glass, I suggest a smaller tile size. With the kitchen being very neutral, adding color with big squares will throw the balance of the room off.

Stanton - do you mean tile smaller than the one I showed in the additional picture I added in the comments?

Sorry to say this, but I agree totally with leelee. Your current kitchen is such a hodgepodge of color- red floor, yellow walls, cabinets which take on a pink hue from the floor, and gray, I think Formica counter top. I think you should rethink your priorities.
If you want to do something, start with a plan. Back splash is normally the last thing done, though it can be chosen in conjunction with the total design concept. Good luck.
