What about cable lighting?

Both monorail and cable systems are much more decorative than track lighting, which tends to feel more commercial. They both allow for the use of heads and pendants, where track lighting is mostly for track heads. Another option is 120V monorail as seen below, the Tech Lighting T-Trak.

I am lighting an apartment/condo kitchen. The monorail or track will go in a 6 ft by 4 ft recessed space (16.5 inches deep above a 9 ft ceiling) that runs down the middle of the kitchen. I will also have under cabinet lighting over the sink and over the stove/oven.

The guy at the lighting store says T Trak is flimsy and should not be used. ???

T-Trak is not as rigid as track, but can be bent to any desired shape or simply installed in a straight run. It's been on the market for many years and can be found on commercial and residential projects. It eliminates the need for a low-voltage transformer and offer a clean, modern appearance.

And in your situation a dropped track system of one type or another - with aimable heads would be useful. So your heads are low enough to aim past the sides of your ceiling recess. And this would let you aim a bit of light up into the recess, too, so it generally brightens the center of your room.

T trak has been installed and I now have a design issue. I ordered the end feed power connector with cable, on my salesman's advice. But because end of t trak is about 12 inches from the power connection, I have a loop of electrical cable coil along the 4 foot width of my recessed space. Should I replace the end feed power connection with a center feed that can hook to the trak closer to the power source? Or should I just live with the industrial look of the electrical cable? None of the pictures on the Tech Lighting web site show the latter (they all show the coiled power cable hidden away).

You can power T-Trak with a flexible end power feed or a center connector that drops from a ceiling junction box anywhere above the T-Trak...
