It is practical in terms of the work triangle for kitchens. The only thing to keep in mind is cost because a contractor will now have to run plumbing from the wall to the island. Hope this helps!!

Putting the sink in the island allows more wall space for the stove and storage area.

Sink is often very practical in the island. Important to have space for dishwasher on one side, and some counter on the other side, ideally with pull-out waste below.

A raised snack bar behind the sink can screen a bit of sink mess from the other side - especially from view of person seated on a chair at table or in adjacent living room.

If I could do my kitchen remodel over I would have my main sink under the window where it is but would have also added a prep sink in my island so my husband and I don't keep getting in each others way

We had one house with a sink in the island and it seemed to attract clutter, unlike my current sink-free island. Also as it was my main prep area water seemed to splash on my dishes, dough, cookbook etc that was on the island at the time. I much prefer my sink-free island

My new kitchen island has a main sink in it and a raised table for seating attached to it. I love it, it hides my everyday dishes underneath and the dirty dishes go straight into the dishwasher, they don't have to gather on the counter!

Yes, without seeing the entire layout you will get guesses. But, my preference is sink free island.

We always put a quick note to verify our experience: Brigitte and I have consistently designed between 70-90 kitchens/year for over 34 years..... We've literally designed thousands of kitchens..... We also design/build full structural including below-grade foundation plans.....
Anyway, for the most part we run sinks on the perimeter cabinetry as opposed to the island..... No matter what, there will be times that you'll be transferring things over the flooring to get to the island and you can certainly understand our concerns there..... If you choose the island, make sure there's plenty of room in back or design it with a knewall in back for splashes.....You'll also need room for D/W and garbage pull-out on either side of sink base.....Finally, be sure there's access to mechanicals from below since there will be numerous plumbing rough points required in the installs.....Take a peek at our page and see the "Pearl" kitchen island.....Hope this helps a bit.....John & Brigitte
