I'd go with artwork...something light and open...it is a tight space and a bookshelf will close it in further....others will chime in. :)

You can put a large art panel there. Check out my work for ideas. I have many large canvas prints that I can ship to you on a tube so you can stretch them locally (or in multiple panels so you can hang them together).

I totally agree about the pattern and texture. the rug has a slight pattern on it, but you cant see that in the photo. we love reading and have a lot of books. we where thinking we might keep it opened backed so you can still see the wall through it. and keep the shelves as narrow as possible to stop it from being to chunky. how else do u recommend that I add texture? these are our curtains which have texture and pattern... I just don't know how to give it the wow factor!

Think you need a larger rug. What size is the current one? 4 by 6? Go to an 8 by 10 so that part of the sofa sits on it.

I love bookcases. And going open back and narrow will work.

Black and red artwork with those textured curtains would look awesome. Look for art on etsy.com. Need a nice coffee table...could be upholstered, but I'd rather see something in chrome and glass.

The room seems very black and white. I would add panel artwork as that would add some life to your walls and some uniqueness as well.

I would use a bookcase unit with closed doors on the lower half and not too high. Wide and low maybe. Closed lower cabinets are great for toys, games and will not clutter. Open shelves tend to get cluttered after a while. When displaying books, use in stacks standing and lying down. Open space between groupings, not all lined up in rows. Add some decor items sprinkled among the books to give the eye a visual break. I would choose a horizontal art piece for the chair wall. Add some art on the long TV wall leaving a lot of bare wall between the TV . and the artwork between the corners of the chair wall and the window wall.

Maybe paint that long wall and create a unit like this. I would try to incorporate your tv in it. Right now tv seems to be floating in space!
