My 1st Attempt at Interior Design (Living Room)

This is my first attempt at interior design, lucky for me my wife let me have some freedom and leeway.

Wonderful attempt. You have put in tons of work. Love the use of space and the harmony of the colours

For your next attempt, you might want to create some areas in you wall design that allows your eyes to rest and also create some areas of major interest and secondary areas of interest.

Without areas for your eyes to rest, a space may appear to be cluttered and may not be as restful and elegant as it could be.
By spreading out pictures all over evenly there is no chance for you to create areas of prime then secondary interest and this creates a space in which occupants are unfocussed and subliminally tense, The concepts of less is more and grouping not even spacing are 2 concepts that you may consider.

I learned this from a graphic designer when I was doing the page layout of a book I was creating. I had spaced out all of the text, images and captions. The designer clued me in to realizing that spacing evenly is space management and not necessarily design.

As an example, look at your wall with the fire place. Do the pictures have to be up at the top of the wall....which also creates tension. Can the pictures be grouped so that there is eye room around the grouping. On the wall with the pictures and items on the ledge...consider creating distance between the two groups.

My next attempt is the white plain ugly door, this is the door to the now master bedroom which used to be the garage.

I think foreverreno is on point. Your home is very "homey" but I think you might consider editing a bit. If you are open to it, removing the nicknacks on the ledge above the photo wall might be a good idea. I also think you could add some style with a more colorful rug and valance. However, your style is very evident by the photos and you've got to feel comfortable as the #1 thing. :)

There are few extra knickknack's on the ledge for the fall season so they make it look more crowded. We are actually thinking about taking that wall out and opening it up to the kitchen.

I was going for an patriotic, Americana theme with out overdoing it or being cheesy. I am a retired military so it resonates with the family.

I'm impressed you're a dude! This is very much my style and I like what you've done. My only suggestion would be to swap out the Americana items during the holidays to avoid over crowding. I do this too and like that I'm not looking at the same knick knacks years round - makes the different seasonal decor even more special :)

I'd take down the valance and just have side panels. Otherwise, great job.

Added a chair rail and baseboard to our focus wall then painted the bottom section a deeper brown color.
