Whitewashing brick fireplace?

Hi all, got a new house with this massive brick fireplace. The red and mauve paint will go, but am thinking of whitewashing the fireplace for a beachy/shabby feel. The room does not get a lot of light. Thinking of wainscoting also. What do you all think?

No question. I would whitewash it. It is too imposing as is.

Imposing is a perfect word.. It's huge and takes over the whole room. My goal is more "coziness".

I really like the brick on your fireplace. I would get rid of the red colour from either side of the fireplace and let the fireplace pop by contrasting it. Right now there is too much of distraction from all the colours around it..

I agree, the red is a bit much. There is a lot of neutral tan and gray in the house.

Paint the wall first and then see how you feel about the brick. I happen to like it as is.

Wainscoting would make the room look too chopped up.

It's a really short room. I can take three long strides and get to the fireplace. Beadboard maybe?

I agree with a few others above. Keep the brick and get rid of the red. I love the fireplace and it would look great with gray or beige walls.

you can just paint the bricks light stone color, or the same color as the wall. they would still retain the brick texture but the whole combination would look light and modern.

Whitewashing the walls will be like turning on the lights--go for it. Actually, I wouldn't whitewash it, I'd fully paint it white. It would tone things down and modernize the wall, while still leaving some texture.

The room definitely needs light- it's very dark and is the first thing you see when you open the front door.

Once the red is gone, I think the space will be brightened up. I'm a fan of natural brick :)
