Our client is a huge Picasso fan and supplied us with the photoshoped files to give to the splashback printer.

It's Picasso's Guernica, which depicts the bombing of the town of Guernica, in the Basque region of Spain during the Spanish civil war. Kind of an odd choice to put death & destruction in your kitchen.

Still seems a travesty of what Picasso was trying to express!

Have to agree with elleden and Adele; I gave an audible gasp when this picture flashed on my screen. I don't understand this at all. :(

@ keypeice: you approached this from the true standpoint of a professional: listened to the client's wants, and applied a professional (color) eye to the project. if this is the emotion they choose for their kitchen....that's their choice. and at least it's something different...i think you succeeded here. good work!

Its interesting that people have been so passionate about this particular job. We do not police what clients are and are not allowed to use in their own homes. We just make it work as best as we can. We love to do jobs that are a little different though. A change is as good as a holliday as they say! Thank you for your feedback neapolis design, we really appreciate that you truly understand. :)

I agree its an odd topic but I still think its beautiful! Would you be able to share how it was constructed? Did you have the high resolution image printed directly on the back of the glass or onto another substrate then back mounted to glass?

Hi, thank you we think it is beautiful too! As you mentioned it is a high res image printed on tempered glass. If the splashback is going behind a cooktop, it needs to be tempered and the wall needs to be finished in a cement sheet rather than plasterboard. We also specify all of our splashbacks on 'Starphire' glass so the colour is not distorted by the green in standard glass. We have had fun photoshopping amazing images for kitchen splashbacks and bathroom feature walls.

I think it is unique and stunning I would like to do this in my breakfast bar area using the skyline of New York . What kind of professional would I need to contact to help me with this e.g. tile specialist ?

The 'Guernica' as a kitchen backsplash? Wrong theme. It depicts the tragedy of the bombing by German warplanes of a town by that name during our civil war (I'm a Spaniard). It is a subject for reflection and mourning, not for a kitchen backsplash.....

@ Key Piece. I -and others- are not critizising your work, you need to understand that. What we are critizising is your client's controversial choice of 'Guernica' as a kitchen backsplash. While I've seen reproductions of this painting in living rooms, home offices or libraries, I can assure you that many a Spaniard would be offended, outraged, in disbelief -pick one- if they saw the above picture. That's all. How would you like seeing the same kitchen backsplash with, say, a photo of President Kennedy's assasination (Mrs. Kennedy crawling over the trunk of the car and all)? It would be in bad taste, wouldn't it?

It is great to incorporate art into our everyday lives, I'm all for it. But there is art and then there is decorative art. Those who love the 'Guernica' used in a kitchen backsplash seem to ignore the intense meaning of that piece of art. It is the equivalent of using a painting of Ground Zero with the remnants of the Twin Towers in a smoking pile or a photo of Dresden after the Allied bombings. But I bet some people would do that too...

The Guernica is an intense depiction of destruction, death and sorrow after the bombing of a Spanish town as Picasso felt it, and a piece for quiet reflection and respect, definitely not decorative art. It is in very bad taste and extremely senseless and offensive to use it as a kitchen backsplash, regardless of how well done the job was or how innovative the technique or materials are, that's not what the argument is about, so the designers shouldn't be offended by my comments. The argument is about the subject matter, never the workmanship.

This will be my last comment and I'm turning the comments off. It's futile to try to make some people realize how morally wrong and inappropiate some choices can be. But of course, people might choose copies of any of Goya's 'Disasters' series for the nursery, why not???

Indeed, using Guernica as a kitchen backsplash borders on the bizarre.
Even if it were done in some sort of ironic, postmodernist sense it would be offensive. This way it is just sad, and a monument to the incredible lack of education even about very recent history and even the most important pieces of international art.

Backsplash is amazing- plain and simple. Art is subjective. Picasso is iconic.

hello~ where o where did you find the backsplash! in spite of others criticism... it makes me quite happy and wonder about using a different image... the option of having the artworks changeable too...as Guernica isn't the happiest but the idea is top notch. I wonder how Paul Klee would feel about having his works commodified. there are so many public domain artworks that I adore and wouldn't mind using in my kitchen...thank you...

I think this is insulting to Spain and Picasso, but I do like everything else about the kitchen.
