Shower niche lighting

Can you explain the lighting in the shower shelf? How do you access it? What type of lighting is it?

We used a Wet Location rated LED strip light and placed a frosted glass lens over the strip in a detail that was designed to eliminate any lamp imaging. This was then all sealed into the niche with marine grade silicone. In a residential setting, and with the rated life of the LED strip light, the next maintenance on this strip should be years down the road. At this time, it can be changed by removing the silicone and replaced. Then it can simply be siliconed back into place.

It seems that the LED strip light is installed on the bottom of the niche. Correct? I am installing a wet location LED strip light inside a shower niche but I was thinking to install it on the top (ceiling) of the niche until I saw this picture. Is there a reason for where to best put the light or is it purely personal preference?

If you don't mind disclosing, what's the offset depth from the wall? I'm currently framing and I'd like to know how to achieve this look, love it!

If I remember correctly, we just did this entire detail in the depth of a 2x4 stud wall. Hope that helps. In person it looks even better. Good Luck!

I am thinking of installing a chrome shower niche. Can I use an LED strip light as well?

Chrome sounds very cool, there's no reason you couldn't do that as long as you're not expecting the light to go through the chrome surface. As far as reflections of the illuminated lens in the chrome, that could add a really interesting level of depth. Feel free to post a picture after you do this, I'd be really interested to see how it turns out.

Hello..... Anyone still here :) ??

When running the LED strip (at the top) of the shower niche, my question is how do you get the power to it and where does the driver / switch live ?

If you read my first response above, that explains how we did it. The driver was remoted to the accessible ceiling above and a low voltage wire was run from the driver to the LED strip in the sealed niche below the glass.

If I were to install the lighting at the top of the shower niche instead of the bottom, do you think I need to seal it in with glass as well? or could we leave it open? How would I best mount it to the top of the niche? Is there a particular place you'd recommend buying the LED strip lights from?

Sorry just saw your question.

The answer is no, the fixture just needs to be wet location listed and if it's tucked up in the lid of the niche there's no need to seal it with glass.

Im currently working on a project where i had the LED light placed in top of the shower niche. It has to be Wet Rated and you will need to either hardwire a power supply in the wall (what i did) OR they do have ones that plug into an outlet but not safe directly in shower.
