Microwave in island?

We are thinking of putting out microwave in the island? Has anyone done this and thought it was still function? My husband and I are tall and have 2 small kids (6 month an 2 yr old) so I worry we won't like using it in the island but do think in a few years the kids can use it easily. We don't want to spend the money on a microwave drawer. Any thoughts/ considerations on putting a regular built in microwave in the island??

Reconsider the microwave drawer, I got a great price on a factory refurbished one from Sharp. I also have young children and they cannot reach into it so I consider that a plus. I bought mine on eBay and was very pleased with the experience.

If you are tall, I think an island microwave is very uncomfortable and hard to use. We just put one higher than usual, over a double oven. If you think about it, you don't want your kids getting into it when they are very small, but by the time they are old enough to safely use it, they will be tall enough to reach a regular height microwave or able to use a small step stool.

How high is your microwave above the double oven... Does it make it hard to use being that high?

I have put microwaves in islands but primarily when they are not used a lot for cooking. Reheating or popcorn being the primary usage. If you cook in your microwave then the microwave in an island tends to be too low to used comfortably.

Hi kb... For under-the-counter, the drawer micro's are easiest to use, but a simple (cheaper) one will work fine, too - tho it is a little lower than ideal for a taller adult. Great for kids, though. Happy nuking! Mark

...be sure to leave 3/4" or so above and below, for air circulation.

We have had our microwave on a shelf under the counter for years, since our children were small. Now that they are grown, I am still putting one there. Its very easy to use, convenient to reach, easy to see into, and i highly recommend it. So, I vote yes. We originally put it there for the kids to use. That worked out well too, because they would cook in it regularly.

I really like my wolf drawer microwave in island...little smaller than dacor that is under counter in my other house, but so much easier to use.
