What is your budget? Your home seems to be very traditional. Carpet can be one of the least expensive options - first thing is to price carpet replacement and determine how much you can do now. You may want to work around this sort of pale camel in back hallways and secondary bedrooms for now.

It might look pale but it is bright yellow and thick almost like a shag that is plastic runner they have kept in hallway for ware and tear. I want all to enjoy not worry about messing it up
I have boys and they have friends over all the time

Sand boards and stain or paint them. We used matchstick bamboo runners until we could afford carpets, when replaced they made great weed mats for the garden and winter insulation for the chook shed so there was no waste.
