All - I'm looking for guidance regarding framing a drop/false ceiling in the kitchen. We removed two adjoining walls and created a 12' x 12' kitchen, open to the living room and dining room. The living room ceiling has some crazy texture and fake beams, one of which terminates against where one of the removed walls used to be. My thought is that I will install a 1" x 6" t&g ceiling, dropped 6" from the old ceiling. This will cover the holes from the removed walls and the old vent hood, and also create something against which the fake beam can terminate. Even with the 6" drop the kitchen ceiling height will still be 8'. I do not want to go into the attic and disturb the new insulation. I have 1" of ceiling (plaster and wallboard) between me and the roofing joists, which run perpendicular to the direction I want to hang the t&g, and are on 24" centers. From an overhead view, the removed walls are on the left and the bottom. The remaining walls are on the top and the right. The 6" drop is not a fixed number. I'm just looking for the best way to frame it out about 5" - 6" for nailing the t&g. Thanks a lot.
