And most of them give me a horrible headache.

Some smell really horrid, others like disinfectant, but, if you find the right one its glorious.

Absolutely love scented candles, but only a select few. Capri Blue and Tyler Candle are amazing!

While I love candles, I have yet to find a scented candle that I enjoy.

I prefer mulled cider on the stove or something freshly baked, but a lightly scented candle works as a substitute. Some of the candles have enough fragrance that adding pine cones and scented greens make a lovely center piece in a glass vase.

My house isn't a home without one burning each night. If you can't have a hearth fire, these are the next best thing. I do find that the pricier ones are better: no headaches, pure, real scent. Yankee Candle makes me ill; Bath and Body Works are the better low-end. Cire Trudon is my favorite, Voluspa and Paddywax, too.
What I can't be in are homes that have been Febreezed within an inch of their lives. Or those poor children who emit a ten-foot aura of laundry (Bounce sheets?) Since when did Gain become the comfort-chemical smell of "clean"? Yech.

They sometimes bother my asthma, so I don't use them very often. Holiday time is about it, but then I have to open a window a crack.

The smell of chemicals burning/melting/infusing is not a fresh smell. It's like wearing too much cologne in an elevator. It's much stronger in the house then the owner realizes. When you leave your home the 'scent' is in your hair and clothes. I can always tell when people are using fake scents in their home…and their children also smell. What's the point? If you like candles burning, just use unscented candles.

Inside my home I burn pure beeswax candles with cotton wicks - mostly limited to special occasions. I burn the tea light sized candles inside deep thick glass holders to reduce fire hazard and keep a careful watch on them. These give off a very soft scent of honey. Outside on the deck I will sometimes burn good quality Danish paraffin tea light candles (again with cotton wicks). I never burn any candle that has a metal wick - some candles still use lead wicks.

As a general rule, I try to stay away from all chemically scented products (whether cleaners, personal care or decorative items) in my home for health reasons. The chemicals used to make most scented products are bad for human health and should be avoided whenever possible. This is particularly important in home with children or residents/visitors with compromised immunity or respiratory problems.

I never have a scented candle. To many people have allergies. Home cooking always smells better.

I used to burn candles in my home all the time. There are different types of candles and some are not as "poisonous" as others. But I've recently discovered that using a diffuser with essential oils has many benefits on top of making my house smell great. So I only use a diffuser now.

I wish Pier One would bring back their Cranberry Balsam candles, my favorite scent. It's been at least ten years since they sold that scent...but I still have stashed a few dozen votives in two "candle cupboards". I love to open the doors of these cabinets and get the rush of that scent. It's the fragrance I associate with "home". When we go out of town, and return home, I can detect just the slightest bit of it lingering in those cabinets. It makes me happy.

edit...I just checked, and it looks like I am going to be heading to Pier One! Seems it's available again! Hurray!!! :)

I like the kitchen smells - pumpkin, apple, cinnamon etc. Nothing too overpowering. My kids school uses Yankee Candle as a fundraiser annually so I feel obligated to pick up a few.

Detest food smells in the bathroom. Like you have baked in a latrine. Poo and food DO NOT mix.

Nope. Most of them are a direct line to a migraine for me. Very occasionally I'll use some essential oil in a diffuser (like in the bathroom when trying to give a bit of a 'spa' feeling for a relaxing bath) but even there I have to be careful about the quality of the essential oil.

I'm paranoid about fires. I fell asleep once while burning a candle...nothing happened but I am too forgetful and this makes me nervous lol I use scentsy. It's a lightbulb that melts scented wax. What's the worst that can happen? The bulb burns out? This makes me feel safer

I try to be very careful and if I light them only in the bathroom on tiled area out of reach of anything that may catch fire. Do candle have labels that state if they have petroleum or not? Interesting point made there!

I prefer my Lamp Berger to candles. I do have one large 3 wick I unscented candle in a cupboard in case of power failure

Only non paraffin and naturally scented but never in the dining room.

I have a very good sense of smell, adore fragrance, but have not been able to find a candle that doesn't smell like cheap cologne. I'll admit I haven't tried any of the very expensive offerings, but I've only seen these available on line and I'm not willing to take a chance that they might not have a pleasant aroma.

@darylsmon, I like the candles by Sweet Petula (on etsy). They smell light and pretty fresh. I don't like heavy scented anything...for example, I cannot understand why Chanel 5 is so popular. To me, it smells like cheap cologne that my grandma used to have.

Candles made from petroleum are bad for health. We use beeswax, soy or battery. Also the odd solar one.

My girlfriend likes to burn a candle in our kitchen "to get rid of the cooking smells" but to me, nothing could be worse. Revolting, beeswax or otherwise.

They give me a headache. I can't even walk into a candle store without adverse affects.

Jillian, the candle stores smell awful and make one sick..There are candles that use more natural fragrances and those don't provoke headaches...I get migraines from those strong Yankee candle type candles, so I know what you mean

Voluspa Candles

They use synthetic scents which defeats the whole purpose. Although I'm a huge advocate of natural candles, no candles burn clean because whether they're natural or not they all create soot to some extent. But you can minimise the soot creating a good quality candle and burning it properly.

I use scented candles when I am hosting holiday parties, but other than that I'd prefer not to use them.

I used to be a big fan of scented candles and I still burn them occasionally. A couple of years ago I was introduced to essential oil diffusers. Now I'm more likely to enjoy their pure scents and the health benefits that come from using high quality oils.

Diffusers are great too, natural candles and diffusers bring different benefits. I use scented candles for the combination of scent and atmosphere they create with their flickering light and the scent last as long as they're lit, diffusers tend not to last as long but I like the fact that the oil is not heated.

I read an article about indoor air pollution and all the candles and scenty things are a very significant primary cause. I like the smell of some of them, but ever since I was educated about them I can't stand the thought of poisoning my lungs and body. "Natural" or not, they're bad.

Where I live, Fredericksburg, TX, we have a local candle business called Circle E Candles. That is the only place I use actual candles from. The scents are not overwhelming to the point of headaches or nausea. They are perfect! Even their wax melts! Other than that, I use Eucalyptus/Mint sprays from Bath & Body Works.

Like Vintage, I live in a town blessed with a candle company (AI ROOT). I buy their candles, both scented (mostly seasonal) and unscented. I burn the unscented ones in the kitchen and dining room, and the scented - in moderation - in the living room, bathroom and bedroom. I think they are lovely. The key is to buy quality candles and to exercise moderation. I am not a huge fan of food scents - I'd rather smell actual food. Root sells a scent called "hosta", which does not smell even remotely like hostas (I don't think they have a scent...), but does smell like summer!

i don't like scented candles burning where food is being cooked or served. But i do burn one in the bathroom which is far from kitchen.
