Remodeling kitchens can be overwhelming, but you are off to a great start. Take cues from the rest of your rooms in the home. What colors do you like? Then choose colors that compliment those. I agree, unless you are in for another huge project leave the trim. You can always changed your mind down the road after you pick floors etc.

If you don't like white cabinets, paint them, by all means, but white cabinets let you get a more decorative counter and backsplash without having to worry about competing colors. The other features in the kitchen would become the focal point and the white cabinets would help keep it from being overwhelming or too dark. Using a white subway tile with a colored glass accent and a lighter counter would create a very clean and sleek look, or go with a darker counter and tumbled natural stone backsplash for a more traditional look. The white cabinets will only hinder you as much as you let them.

Being overwhelmed is completely natural at this stage! But rest easy because we truly believe that it's worth the chaos. And I agree with our friends at Traditions in Tile - if painting is the only cure then definitely go for it.

Many of our customers who choose white cabinets decide go with a contrasting countertop to make it the star of the show.

If the doors are original to the home and the rest of the doors in your home are stained, I would stain them. It is nice to be able to keep elements of the original architecture details in an older home.

Well I have calm down and I think I am back on track (whatever that means). I thank everyone for the help and sugguestions. I have a great contractor who has allowed me too take my time.

I am trying for the contemporary look with shaker cabinets, the granite is Blue Pearl which will be install in December. So now I need to pick paint color, cabinet hardware and flooring.

I think for me I need to pick one item at a time, get a feel for that item and then move on to the next. Will keep u posted.

To answer your question about the trim, it really depends what other finishes you choose (backsplash, countertop, floor...)

I think for me that will be the last decision. My contractor sand and stain just one window seal for me to see how it would come out. The color he used Ipswich Pine, came out dark in some places and light in others. I really don't want to paint the trim white or the doors.

If your trim is pine you may need to use a conditioner before staining to get a more even stain color.
