Yes, the table and rug would work together imo. No, glass tables are not out of style. I find myself suggesting them all the time. Especially when there is a great rug underneath. I'd worry about the kiddos though. I'm currently coffee table-less because I have two young boys at home.

I like it. I don't have kids, but if i did i maybe i would still keep it in order to show them first hand that their actions have concidences

I used to have one. It was driving me crazy, I felt I had to clean it every 5 minutes. After a short period of time I put a tablecloth on it, I definitely wouldn't buy one ever again.

I love my glass coffee table. You can put anything on it and it cleans up easily. It's way more practical than a wood one, which is heat and scratch intolerant.

Table is gorgeous...works both formal and casual. And love in combination with rug choice.

That's a beautiful table. I hate my glass and chrome table, however, because my dog likes to lick the chrome and I never seem to get the glass clean enough.

I think it would look beautiful! Love glass tables ... IMO, children need to have things like this in their home. They learn how to respect household items ... all is not a toy for them to play near/on/with.

I agree with indianpatti. While yes, you are not going to set up a china shop of a house with kids around, children should be taught that they are to handle certain things with care. If they don't, there is a consequence.

I am continually amazed at how people dance around their children. I have had people pass on buying all sorts of things because the kids will destroy it.

So, your glass table will be beautiful and you will have given your children a gift also.

You need a rug... not cowhide for this setting.

There seems to be a lot going on with that coffee table design -- you don't want to totally distract from the cool rug. There are lots of companies that will offer a coffee table with different options, such as a wood or metal top instead of a glass top. This shape, from our line, comes to mind -- the limestone top will take a beating!

@cdrdesign - I think people do need to take into consideration their particular kids/environment, though, and how much things like fingerprints are going to bother them. If you have a kid who is the type to test the limits all the time AND having a fingerprint on the table is going to make you instantly dive for something to wipe it off with because you can't stand it being there for any time at all, then probably a glass coffee table will just cause unnecessary stress for everyone. If your kid is more likely to leave it alone or you'd be fine with just wiping off the fingerprints once a day plus before company comes over, then it'd probably be a better fit. Buying furnishings that you're going to feel you should be tending to all the time is just silly - this stuff is supposed to improve your life, not consume all your time.

(Well, unless you spend your time on websites like Houzz, I suppose. That's obviously different. ;) )

Though I agree that some people go overboard - there is stuff you wouldn't put in a playroom, sure, because that's supposed to be an area where kids don't have to watch themselves as much and can explore their creativity and have fun. But there are other rooms in the house and most kids can learn which rooms are for lots of play and which rooms are for being more careful with things.

Stacey, I am not sure of the context of your table and rug…..so I don't know if it would look good with your furniture, how large the rug is in relation to the coffee table, etc.

So, maybe if you could tell us more, we can give you a better idea if this table will fit in.

Glass tables are definitely not outdated, and that is a gorgeous one. As others have expressed, more upkeep with kids and sharp corners could be a problem too. Personal preference.

I think that glass coffee tables can still be stylish, but honesty I think this one could easily look a little too early 90's with the wrong room. Something about that hexagonal shape. As another homeowner with children, unless the coffee table is meant for a formal room like a parlor that is rarely used or off-limits for the kids, I think something with less sharp corners (like wood or upholstered fabric) is a better idea for now.

Yes - I like the two together - tres chic. Small kids and glass don't always mix - but its only for a few years, and glass is easy to keep clean...I'd go for it!

Ok. See it. Hard to tell looks like a hide? Any table will work. But fun to use glass to show off rug.

@indianpati , my mom was an antique collector and she loved putting her little crystal sculptures and designer's china dishes on top of coffee table at our formal guest room, me and my 4 siblings never broke any ,surprisingly, the only times we would have accidents when we have guests with children who just as you mentioned , think everything is a toy.

Just to clarify…I have nice items around my home as well. Some are breakable. I do not allow my children to feel as though everything is a toy nor do I "dance around" my children. I simply choose not to have a potentially serious injury for the sake of design. My youngest is 3 but I guarantee I will have a glass table when he gets a bit older and can fully understand how seriously he can be hurt should he break it.

Tempered glass coffee tables have much more strength than regular glass, you can find ones with smooth edges if safety is a concern , if you are not so sure , maybe you can look for pexiglass tables,they are transparent plastics , however, they are much more expensive.
the photo on the left is for a tempered glass table, and the right is a pexiglass one. hope it helps

I personally know three people who have injured themselves with glass tables. Children need to be kept safe and glass can be introduced when they are older and no longer at the stage where they're running around.

I agree with comments regarding fingerprints. When my three were little, I had both a glass dining table and a glass coffee table. Never, ever again. Kids or no kids. It was like I had to walk around with a bottle of Windex and paper towels constantly. Absolutely would never recommend to anyone.

I have glass coffee tables and I regret it almost every day. The fingerprints are just bad. My kids are tweens and it doesn't get any better.

Who built your house? If they are similar, maybe we can share ideas!

Stacey, I am not liking your latest table with the rug. The rug will be a showpiece and this table is just too busy.

What about the rug? Will that have the similar issues with kids? It is light in color. Is it synthetic?

The rug seems to be a bit too small for that table,they are both nice and they are not outdated you just need to make them work with the other things that you have . Is the wood floor at the store? The wood floor is more of a rustic style therefore the table will not work with it .
If you have small children do not get a glass table nor one with sharp corners ,I would go with a round or oval to avoid injuries .
