There might be several wood species that can give this look, it's a 'grade' thing; how the wood is sorted. Some people want to minimize color differences. I know some oaks can give this 'effect', but hickory is famous for it and maple does pretty well too. Staining it could enhance the look, because when the stain is buffed in (instead of just a layer), it will stick in the grain of the wood. Just find a local flooring expert who can show you samples and look into their profolio pictures of entire rooms.
