I think there are two problems with the mirror:

1. The seize and shape. This fireplace comes around very boxy because everything is rectangular. To switch that up I would consider buying a round or oval shaped mirror.

2. The color. If you don't want to buy a new mirror paint would already help a lot as well. You could spray paint it in either black (to pick up on the fireplace frame) or grayish like the stone.

Find a big, rugged oval mirror with a wooden frame in an antique shop to bring out the shelf and rough brick. Turn the oval sideways. Down the road, think about having tall wooden bookcases flanking the fireplace. Put a great lot basket on the hearth and a huge pile of logs in the fireplace.

I'm ok with the size and shape, as they echo the rectangles in the pic...it's the color that's throwing off (and maybe the frame). Everything else in the pic is solid and rectilinear...the "fancy" gold frame seems out of place. May be fixed by painting frame black, which might disguise the "fancy". A simpler, black (or silver) frame on the mirror would work best.

I see a reflection of art in the mirror, what does that look like over the FP?

Mirror not working. Remove all from mantel and just on ine end, put tall candles. Blue pic on other wall try over firepl hang horizontally. 5-6" above mantel. Next to firepl where table is remove add a very tall big palm in a ceramic pot in turquoise. Use the teals as accent color in pillows. I would white wash firepl it's paint a dove gray and water, easy to do. Color of bricks are throwing off room. Also your pictures on walls way too high. Eye level when hanging.

On hearth on right side add a tall 3 ft big pot. In a silver try TJMax for them great price. Let's see rest of room.

Spray paint mirror a black then find another wall for it.

Maybe consider re-framing the mirror. The size is nice, but the detail in the frame is too much with the brick pattern-needs to be a more simple frame. Yes the current color is too much-needs to be more subtle. Silver could be possible color but I would also consider champagne or a soft rose gold. It will work nicely with the all the warm tones that are happening in the brick. That will also allow you to bring other warm tones into the space to pull it all together if you would like.

I would also consider rotating the mirror. Then on either side place 3 large candle holders of different sizes for a little more drama. The candle sticks you have right now are two thin. You could also do hurricanes on either side. Home Goods or Pottery Barn, even Pier 1 would carry multiple options.

So I have taken the mirror out as yes it looks too dated I thought about putting the art on the wall on the fireplace but it doesn't fit. Do u think it would look ok if I put it sideways on top of the fireplace or leave the fireplace wall the way it is and just add some tall candles and take out what I have? Please help. I am also thinking of putting some teal and purple cushions on the couches and take out the green pillows.
Any other suggestions? I am attaching few photos of the room. The walls are grey and the rug is off white with grey wood like grains

When you look at this very last pic you posted, can you see how the table looks out of place and takes away from the fireplace? It is a great table for the room, but just needs to be beside your furniture instead.

You need pillows that tie in with the art. That will be a great addition to this room, too.

Ok here I put the picture sideways have to hang it properly though but how do u think it looks before I make the wholes as I do have an option to take the artwork back as I just got it yesterday and may be can get something else? I liked the mirror better :)

The art was too big over the couch......see how it extends beyond the top of the door? And I do not think it could be turned and fit over the couch, either. I actually do not hate it on the mantle. Would like the two candles together instead of one at either end.

Oh! I think mirror looked dated and the artwork gives colour to the bricks? My husband thinks I am crazy he thinks all is in the same room! Lol,

Put that little end table by a sofa or a chair. It's purpose is lost by the FP. Get a real plant for the corner instead of the tall fake flowers in large vase.

Usually, mirror over FP isn't the best but yours is ok there and it'd look better with silver spray painted frame.

Try the mirror vertically, it will take the eye up and get rid of the square look Finish is fine and if you like it vertically , you'll have more room on mantel for accessories. Think you need heavier accessories there. Vases? Turquoise ones would be pretty.

You've got beautiful white shutters...any reason you couldn't paint the wood trim in the rest of the room white like shutters?

I cannot see where the mirror is reflecting anything special in the room???

I used the fake flowers in the vase so I can use the old vase and put purple flowers in to tie in with purple and teal cushions on the couch :) thanks a lot for your comment

I think i like it on it's side....do you have a heavy vase you could place on the right? Yellow or silver would be nice.

yes that sounds good I do need a silver vase will have to make a trip to homesense and get a silver vase I have a teal vase but have to take it back I think as the colour is nice but doesn't do anything with the design.
I will have to tie the room with some purple and teal cushions.

More on the right is needed since that side is bigger. Loving the fun you are having with the blue accessories in the room right now! Really draws out the blue in the art.

WOW! I can already see how something silver on the right will bring out that opposite side in the art work.

Can the end table scoot all the way back beside the couch instead of in front of it???

I wanted the white frames but the whole house has brown so it was too much to change all frames and doors to white. :(

Yes I moved the end table and now need to go shopping for the big silver vase. I am also thinking of getting taller candles and may be take the two tall silver candles back? Any ideas? Thanks for your comments

I would take the two tall silver candles back and then maybe hold off on taller candles even until you see how just the big silver vase looks.

I haven't been to target. I did go to urban barn but pricy so didn't buy them. Do u think I should mix teal and purple or just teal pillows? Will have to go on sat to target to checkout. Thanks a lot for your comments

It is always nice to have several accent colors. Teal and purple, or even that green, play nicely together. Try for patterns and not all solids. Are you near a Pier !? I have not been there looking for pillows lately, but you might find some there, too, and those prices are fairly decent, also.

You might even find the vase at pier 1. Ask them for a suggestion for the bigger vase you have in the corner, too.

Oh! Are you going to be ok without something on the wall behind the couch now? You kind of lost your art work for that area!

Yes I will ask at pier 1. Humm ya now I have all my walls bare nothing on any wall except for the art above the fireplace. Any suggestion what I can put on top of the fire place?

Both painting and mirror have issues with scale, as you know. Just my guideline on pieces above mantels - i prefer they stay within the footprint of the firebox opening (preferably a bit smaller.) Your mirror might do this if hung vertically, but the style of your mirror is not working with the coarseness of the brick. Over the sofa, the art is too tall, so try it there but hung horizontally as you were doing at the FP. For now, consider simply accessorizing the mantel by putting your blue pieces and silver items there. Meanwhile, shop for larger scale things that repeat this color. I'm thinking a large blue pottery platter (18" or so) on a silver stand could soften with roundness. Pick up the blue in pillows, throw, etc. Then remove the flowers and place the tall black vase on the hearth. For balance, a set of black fire tools (often a 2nd hand find) would be suitable, even if not used.

Oh thks a lot I do have fireplace tools which are gold but can paint and just keep them there as we converted the fireplace to gas. So I guess I should take the painting out as it doesn't fit width wise either:(

white wash the mantel bring it out of the brick. If you can get some wooden cutouts to add to it. Thats what I did and we restoned our fireplace we hated the briick and took years off the house. Im in process of painting all wooden trim white too. We took carpet out around fireplace and put tile that looks like wood. I just coulnt believe what covering that brick did it took years off house. Its called Air Stone you can only get from Lowes its so easy you just glue it on. And we use our stove to heat house the stone is 75% lighter than real stone but still works like stone and you cut with a hacksaw. Check it out. Comes in 2 colors this is the lighter the other is more grey.

P.S: we haven't finished it yet need top cap & gabels to cover the brick holding up the mantel. I want wood not stone. We have some that look like they are holding up arch we buitl in hallway.

That would look nice. I actually called a painter to come and paint the fireplace so white wash is probably better and I can paint the whole fireplace including the stones and bricks all in white to make it smooth looking

No problem. I beat the fire out of the mantel, I went into my shop and used a hammer a chisel a chain put nails in a board. And I felt so good after that LOL! Then I watered down paint in black green and white brushed on whiped off alot till i got it looking old and then added the wood cut outs. It was cheap and fun. Let us know and show us pics can't wait to see.

Oh wow I don't think I am that talented or gutsy. Wouldn't know where to start. I would have to hire someone to do it all :(
When I got my main floor done in summer I asked the contractor who did my kitchen and he quoted a ridiculous price of $2000 just to remove the bricks so we thought of hiding off
