i would pull the slate color out of that border on the floor.

Have you looked at shaker style cabinet instead of raised panel?

Are you planing on replacing the cabinets with the style shown in the photo? Are you considering mimicking the current cabinet layout with the staggered wall cabinet heights? In a nut shell the cab color you have chosen is lovely but will require some serious upgrade in lighting. Maybe you don't take the cabinets all the way to the ceiling and you run LED lighting across the top to wash the ceiling and then under cabinet light as well. The size of the backsplash on the sink side of the island will dictate to some degree what kind of tiles will work on the back splash. You have selected a variety of dark, light absorbing fixtures so make sure you focus on upping your lighting.

i agree with upgrading the lighting, like cabinet color u chose, maybe pewter hardware, definately crown moulding would look great if same staggered theme. mixture of stone/glass would be nice for backsplash to give ur kitchen some sparkle

We are not upgrading our cabinets at all. We are restaining the ones we currently have. New cabinets are out of our price range :(

My cabinets were almost identical to yours. I replaced mine with white shaker cabinets 42" but realize that is not an expense you want to take on. But I can tell you that painting them white and adding a small cabinet over the top or something to extend the length of the shorter cabinets will make the kitchen look bigger and update it and make it so much brighter. Adding long handles also updates the look. I put long brushed nickel on mine and have gotten so many compliments. Everyone has told me how much the white cabinets modernize the kitchen and make it look so much bigger. Just a thought but seeing yours is very easy for me to visualize mine. I also added white subway tile as a backsplash which lengthens it was well and makes it look up to date. I also added a darker granite which shows off the cabinets and makes it look bigger as well. I have an island too. My kitchen is not that big unfortunately so making it appear bigger has helped a bunch. Just some food for thought.

Love the new cabinet color. I would choose a granite with dark brown and white (but generally on the light side) in it to marry the cabinets and floors. I would probably paint a pretty neutral greige or beige for the walls. I would try to stay with similar metal finishes and think that given the dark cabinet color, a brushed nickel would look good and lighten things a bit. Backsplash could be fairly neutral depending on granite. Slate blue can be utilized in accessories on counter.

Try installing glass panes in a few of the cabinet doors.
Since new 42" cabinets are out of the question, fill the void with a collection large glass vases or beverage pitchers atop the cabinets.
