It would look better if it had posts or pillars. I wonder if it was added because the bay window was added (doesn't look original), to protect both the front door and the bay window from the rain? Any idea how old your house is? It's very pretty!

Thanks! Those are great ideas. Seems to be older roofing on the lower "additional" roof. House was built in the 1930s.

Harding's idea can work, but the house no doubt had a porch originally and restoring that would all to curb appeal. However, I agree completely that a 3' deck surface is of limited use. I would be inclined increase the deck area and simply have part covered and part not--paying attention to the design so it achieves the right look and avoids looking like an idea gone wrong.

I immediately thought of Pillars and to build out the deck to run the width of the house.

The over hang would benefit from support columns and decking. Your house would benefit from new windows replacing the bay.

Thanks for the comments. Windows are new. Skylights and vaulted ceilings on the top floor. We will look at cost of columns and decking.
