Can I attach a 3/8" thick door to a 1/2" glass panel without using a header bar? Will be using a u channel and heavy duty clips attached to wall.

Also the door is 26" wide and the bottom hinge would attach to the pony wall.

In my experiences of bathroom remodels and commercial work you will not find a glass company that will warrant mixing glass thicknesses. I don't know ramifications of this idea so I think any thing you do, you may be on your own. I can't think of any draw backs except the glass not lining up between door and side panel. MUST HAVE plenty of blocking in wall for attaching door. Doubt your seal between door and side panel align but, if you don't mind water splash over flow of wet area then might not matter. Why use door at all if whole bathroom is water tight environment? Here is cool bathroom with 3form by another designer in Tucson. No door but, enough room to shower comfortably. Here is my project Arriola shower room too. In Arriola shower space the glass was attached at floor and ceiling. Still need good wood blocking in ceiling and walls no matter what.

Other picture of shower by Tuscon designer not wanting to attach will have try again later. :(

No I am in Phoenix but, the shower in Tucson picture was by another professional practicing in Tucson. I can find out name if you want? I just always loved that install so, keep picture in my professional resources. My job Arriola bathroom in old central core Phoenix neighborhood. Have many pictures in my business resources for very specific design issues so, just depends on the issue. For me work on bathrooms has been intense this last 1.5 years! Will have many more projects photographed and ready to post in January sometime.

@sieglerdesign, I am from Gilbert. Just always looking for other houzzers from Az. I know groveraxle is from Tucson. When we remodeled our two bathrooms about three years ago, we took out our garden tub and made a walk-in shower instead. Frameless. At first I didn't want a door but found out quickly it was way too cold without one, so had our contractor put one one. It was so expensive!

I think since the economy tanked, more people did re-modeling projects so they could stay in their current homes but get a new design aesthetic.

Always new things to learn! Yes, need shower door if bathroom too, big and airy. I have client Flancer's Cafe in Gilbert. Also, Evo Swim School my project in Gilbert. Gilbert awesome for families and I love consulting for families. They appreciate "high performance" solutions which is more common for commercial work which is my background. Also, strong in construction and remodel and dealing with trades so, let me know if you need sources or people. Always like to try.

Its very, very hard right now to get skilled people but, if a project is small enough I can recommend Eric Bills of Advanced handyman. He will take on projects under 2,500.00 I think if his license is current in Gilbert. Also, for glass use Convert-a-bath. Mostly women running things there so details are important to them. Anyway, I hope I assisted you on your question?

So you did Flancer's remodel? My son knows them and goes there to eat all the time! Great food and I remember when they opened here in Gilbert. I haven't been in since remodel though. Small world or in this case, small valley. Thanks for info.

Thank you for your response. I have to have a shower door and several glass panels on top of a pony wall and was hoping to avoid the not so frameless header bar. One glass professional told me he could do 1/2" glass panel where the door hinges thus avoiding the header but I see your point about the glass alignment. I was hoping this would work and be secure enough.

Pretty...pretty. Doing good....don't drive this thing off in the ditch now. Stay the course. Do the right thing like bid the HECK out of glass you need. Go ahead and do all 3/8" glass for door and sides. Nobody but you knows 3/8" or 1/2". Can you take glass all the way up to ceiling? Need exhaust and humidity unit in shower like made by Broan or Nutone.

When anyone in construction agrees to a non-standard product or procedure then you have to ask yourself, "if this purchase is a problem 6 months from now, will I be able to find and call this service person or company?"

You are right...I was a little concerned when the third glass guy said I didn't need a header. I can't go up to the ceiling so I guess I have to go with what's safe and do the header. Thank you for your response....you said what my gut was saying.

Well if you do a "small profile" head rail in a silver finish I have found that aluminum and other silver finishes can tend to reflect the adjacent color or no color. If you use anodized bronze or black or brown or other dark finish, the header can tend to look like a line in space. If you have bronze hardware I would still do the head rail in a silver finish. They do not have to match. If your bathroom metal finishes are mixed or a silver color then no problem. The head rails of old were so much more obvious because, they were bulky and big. Now days I think you have more "sleek" options.

Thank you so much for all your help. I got lucky I picked chrome for all the plumbing and lighting fixtures in the bathroom because I thought it looked good with the carrara color tile. That definitely looks the best on the header from the pictures I have seen. At least that is working out. Thank you!

The 3/8" glass is pretty much top of the line for residential. Unless the glass panels get very large, I do not know why you would mix the different glass thicknesses. I think you would notice that the glass was different thicknesses. We try to avoid using the header bar or u-channel unless the door hinges are not attached at the wall. We just completed a frameless shower with all 3/8" glass its rock solid.
