Did you want another fan/light combination or just a new light fixture? Look on Lamps Plus for some ideas of what style you would like and finish. This appears to be a small room, so is it just for playing with the children or is there a tv as well?

I don't want another fan/light. I've been thinking about a large drum pendant or something of the sort. The room is used mostly as a playroom and for reading. No TV. As you can see, it's pretty informal so I don't think a "fancy" fixture would work. But, I would like something with some style (and not too expensive ;)).

A drum light would look nice in the room. Search for drum lights on Lamps Plus or even look at Lowe's or Home Depot. Something simple, obviously. I figured the room did not have a tv as it is not large. I wish there could be more closed storage for the toys, etc. Can you take another pic where the chair is? Any way that can be taken out of room? I shall study the two pics you posted for more ideas but if anything this comment will move your dilemma up higher and more folks can see it!

I suggest a semi flush mount style in dark metal and rustic or traditional styling.

I found nothing suitable on Lowe's but did find some on Lamps Plus.

The ceilings look lower than 10 feet. I don't see the point of a drum light hanging down in the middle of the room. That is something that should be positioned over a table. Go with something plain and simple and inexpensive. You don't need an attention getter in conflict with the fireplace.

I know you stated you wanted lighting suggestions but I have another suggestion. With all of the items on and beside the fireplace, I suggest baskets for the kids to toss stuff in on the shelves. It will make the room look more organized :)

What is hanging over the couch? If nothing, I'd make a picture collage with all of your frames on your mantle :)

I am surprised my pics posted because it said there was an error! I like the middle one you posted. I would suggest something relatively simple. I found some at Home Depot, too. My suggestion about the storage was to uncluttered the fireplace area as it is the focal point of the room. Perhaps you can get smallish rectangular ottoman for in front of sofa, so you can put your feet up and would still be soft for the children.

the ceiling height looks more like 9ft, the distance from the standard 7ft high door to the ceiling looks like 2 feet. We have a fan light in our family room with a fireplace. It helps dramatically when we have the fire going and also when we have the a/c on.

If you burn the fireplace, you might want to be careful on what light you choose, especially since you are looking at a drum shade. It will collect dust more than other lights since it is material and not glass.
