Need help with this weird area

As you walk in our front door of our home, straight above your head is this spot, straight in front of you is the stairs.... I want to remove this weird area and just leave it open from the bottom floor to the ceiling above the weird spot... But I am wondering what needs done, and if it is possible or if that floor area is necessary??? Has anybody ever removed it before? Share pics if you have them. I would love to remove it and have a high ceiling area there and let the light hang down lower...
