I'm assuming this is your dining room...do you want impact over buffet or for space overall?
I would have a larger piece of art above the buffet. The existing one is too small for that wall.
The first statement to make is one of balance. Your art is hung too high. Normally 5" above the credenza would be best. If that doesn't feel right, then try it so the center of the art is 60" above the floor. The art makes the statement, but you could use a lamp and/or a glass piece.

Thanks, I'll try the 5". I can't really get a new piece of art cos my mother in law painted it for me. I would Iike to make it look homie but no cluttered. HATE CLUTTER. Thanks

If you frame it in black, that art would make a stronger statement. Give it a simple, but thick black frame. It will pop off the wall nicely.

If you don't want the art there, you can always put it in another room.

Feel free to check out my art and see what inspires you.

decoenthusiaste, I just measured its 60" from floor to middle of pic. I've got more art that I can hang there. Pic is below. Thanks for all your help!!
As suggested above I would hang it vertically and ask your mother in law if she could paint another one or even two of them using the same colour palette then hang it next to each other. I always though a series of matching frames together make a bigger statement. See what I have done for a large area above my corner sofa

Looking at the second picture you posted.....it looks much better. The size of the painting is more balanced. I know you said you don't like clutter but perhaps a lamp or vase with flowers would complement the look?
What size are those frames you have Safai?
    31 x 38 inch or 78 x 96 cm

Your second photo is better. It is more balanced.

Thinking I could hang the orange canvas vertical beside my tv? Would I need 2 or I thought maybe 3 little ones in same colours? I'm moving the big black canvas to above the buffet and going to purchase a lamp (1 or 2?) thank you all so much for your help.
Well done for deciding to keep the larger canvas above the buffet. As for the lamp.....I would get two :-) plenty of space there to put one on each side.
Regarding the long grey canvas with orange bits in it.....one of each side of the TV would go nicely if you position them vertically especially as it matches your accessories. Though some people find having an artwork next to the TV distracting.
But it's very much a personal choice.

depending on where this is situated, a tall table / hall lamp with a striking piece with red to the other side - love it
  • 12 years ago
Thanks, moved the old picture back and in the market for some lamps. Thinking glass base and black shades? Also what can I put on this wall where my a/c unit is? Thanks
  • 12 years ago
Unless you really want to go monochrome I would choose coloured base or coloured shades. One or the other while picking the colour from other accent pieces in the room. As for the space below air con. Another canvas or tapestry or carving. Wayfair.com has a huge selection of affordable wall art

You need 2 matching buffet lamps-tall and thin for each side of the painting.
The first painting is more dramatic and I don't think it will be too small if you have lamps but it should be lowered to be about 6 inches above the buffet. The 60" rule to the center of the painting is more often used when it's hung on a wall by itself with nothing under it.

    What about two of these?

Do you have a Z Galleries, if not go on line. They carry the best art around. You need much bigger 40x40 would be the smallest. Hang 6-8" above top of cabinet. Go very contemporary on a bold color. I like the blue greens. Art should make a statement and not picked because it matches a sofa, or wall color. Your walls are white, which is part of your problem. I see you have a minimal look going. But could stand some color on walls. The Benjamin Moore grays are very nice.

Can you get a bigger piece for this wall and hang your mother art on a much smaller wall. Can she paint you another? And hang vertically side by side? That may work. If you start hanging thing with this, it will only look cluttered, like you hate.
Or paint you 2 more hang the same but stack them you would need hang 2" apart to work. Tell her to paint you a much bigger one, hang low maybe other colors than what you have.

Bring down your TV it's too high and wires show. Go to Lowes or Home Depot they have covers for wires on wall. Try it. Not working like it is. No need for anything around TV. Maybe a potted palm in corner for texture.

    Love the red lamp.
this is what I've done so far. Loving the look!!! Wondering if a vertical mirror would work under air conditioning unit? Thanks

safai I can't attach a pic. It won't work for me
  • 12 years ago
    I'm hoping this works
Could I put a vertical mirror or round mirror on this wall, move my light to other side of couch?
I like it. You went for monochrome at the end but it works :-)
I would hang it lower, vertically and off-center over the left side. Then I would add a lamp (1/3 shorter than the art or shorter on the other side. Then, add one more thing--a vase of flowers, a tray, a letter propped or on the wall. Keep accessories to odd numbers--only 3 or 5 items (including the art).

    Another option?
I really like this piece with this table and the wall space. The two pictures do not seem right to me....let the art on the wall be the only art there maybe?

I think it's looks great. I think I would move it up a few inches, give a little space between the objects and the art. It's ok if the lamp is over it a little, but right now it's a bit squished.
