KIDS ROOM!!!

So we are rebuilding our lake house. And we need to put the kids in the same room. My girl is 12 and my boy is 8. Julia acts like a teen. James is all about sports. They can't compromise for the colors, theme, bedspreads, pillows, or anything furniture. Any ideas on how to make this room special for the both of them? ( no budget )

If a curtain is tacky, then perhaps sheetrock is in order. It shouldn't be too expensive and would solve lots of problems. I'm having a hard time picturing the sharing thing, especially as the kids get older and they want to invite guests.

Cupboard bed along wall for the older one. She will be a teen soon enough and needs her own space.

Perhaps a two layer curtain made of painter's cloth. They can use paint and other stuff to decorate and design their own side. Using two layers would prevent her/his paint, stitching, glue, BeDazzler stuff, staples, etc., from causing funky wrinkles and "warping" on the other sibling's side. You can't see through two layers so they would have more privacy too. Forgive my lack of clarity - I'm sleepy and my brain is shutting down! lol. Painter's cloth is heavier than most curtain fabrics. I would sew loops at the top to slide over whatever rod or line you use. That will work for a year or two until you can get something more private set up. They look adorable and from the picture I believe they love each other very much despite what they say or do to each other (or you) :D

There are also throw pillows, fabric, drape panels, in these patterns. Male, female, and gender neutral items all in the same colours. Smycke wall clock also matches, and Honefoss mirror matches the clock. Also Drona box in black and in yellow, which works in Expedit shelving unit , that can be used as a room divider if screwed to the floor. Also Hjalmaren has 4hooks and hangs on a door, Cirkustalt children's tent, Pallra set of 4 boxes in yellow, Lustifik hat/shoe rack, Alrick swivel chair in red, Lack side table in red, medveten vase in grey, Nyttja poster frame in green, Kvill photo frame; all of these will go with Akerkulla and Akerfraken bedding.

Hi! It's hard to say not having seen a layout of the room but if you have the space to create cubbies for them great, but if it is a small room, keep neutral and than let them pick their personal accents , or if they want a color on the walls do a fun paper , turn it into a creativity project for them where you are hiring them and they are partners in the design business . Unleash their creativity, tell them that they can not show disagreement in front of the client! They may come up with some fun creative ideas! Find one subject that brings them together and start from that ...

Have you looked at ikea for beds.
I think you need to bring in samples and let them try to negotiate a compromise . Then they will both feel they ad a say in their room decor and it will teach them to work together. Of course, you provide the samples from the outset.

Ikea has great bulk shelves (Expedit?). It would be helpful if we had a photo of the room but I would put a 12 shelve one in between beds (you can add extra if you have room) Navy pink and green all look good together. I think PBKids and Teens do great coordinating duvets for what they called "shared" spaces. Good luck!
You/they can find the Ikea style that is suitable for both. From Fabric.com they should be able to narrow down the choices down to something they both like :) I think you/they can strike a compromise between how far you want to take the *shared* look until you get the lakehouse remodeled and they each have their own room :)) Tell them it's a shared project and not a competition between girl/boy or older/younger :)) Tell them the faster they can come to an agreement, the faster you can make it all happen :D

They're kids. They will change their minds a million times before you complete the project. Ask them each to submit to you their first three color choices, anonymously, in writing to you. Chances are, you'll be able to find a happy medium in terms of color options.

Next, we need to see the actual room you'll be using. Trying to suggest options without knowing the space is fruitless.

One option would be to go black and white with only the bedding and pillows being of the color each child desires. Again, go with the 3 options they select and pick the two that go best together. (They're at the age where they should be changing clothes separately. Hope they have a bathroom they can do that in that has a lock.)

Keep in mind, this is YOUR house and YOUR budget. YOU should call the ultimate shots, not the kids. For the most part, all they'll do in that room is sleep. Most days they'll be outside on the lake or in the rest of the house.

I couldn't agree with n247080 more. When we got our lake house our kids (boy and girl) were 6 and 9. No offense to your kids but, they don't need to completely drive the design decisions in your home. While we have plenty of room (they each could have had their own), we chose to use the two guest rooms as a "kids room" and then an "adult" room. We did the kids room in yellow and blue and it was neither masculine or feminine. No complaints from the kids. They were just happy to have a house on a lake.
I have to agree with n247080 and elklaker. IKEA or any nice furniture store should provide a large enough selections of beds, storage and shelving that will be suitable well into their teens. I don't see why they need to co-ordinate their bedding. Two kids, two beds, two sets of bedding. As far as wall decoration, again, two kids - a wall by each by their beds - let them decide what to do within their own space. Paint - Wythe Blue - a gorgeous blue/green color that should make them both happy. Privacy - it's time they learn to respect the privacy of others. They can take turns changing in the bathroom or one can leave the bedroom while the other changes.

My mother taught me that if I wanted something, I needed to do something to get it and not just have it handed to me. If daughter is "picky" and dislikes "tacky" things then let her work for what she wants.
Guys, no kiddy stuff they are almost teens. I think that this is THEIR room so THEY should call the shots. Also, the room is pretty big. We are thinking have 2 twin beds and 1trundle. All I need help on is coordinating what we think is both girl and boy friendly. They want to choose from the colors pink, blue, green, red, white, and navy. They want very fluffy and furry type things. Once again ALMOST TEENS so try to stay on the big kid side.

Give them each a copy of the Ikea catalog, there are lots of teen appropriate, budget friendly options.

Sloppyjoe123, happy for you that you have a summer home.

Though I don't agree with your way of thinking, it's your home and family. So why don't just give them each a budget, take them to the store, whichever one(s) you want to go to and let them each pick their own bedding, pillows, accents....

I know it's heresy to say this, but it's really irrelevant if it doesn't all 'go' together. It's a kid's room (ok, an almost teenager room), in a summer home and the Designer Fashion Police will not issue a citation for mismatched decor. I don't say this to be nasty. I promise.

Just save yourself the stress and aggravation as since you feel that they should decide anyway, just let them decide.

You take care of the rest of your new home. And enjoy!
Sloppyjoe, one more thought: since you mentioned 'no budget' and that the room is quite large and everyone is very concerned about your almost-teenager kids sharing a room now and as they grow (I too would be concerned) how about thinking about something like this.....

There are many companies that make moving walls that can be used as dividers. You can even use sliding closet doors. I'd strongly consider this possibility, if there's room.

If not this then do you have the space to build their closet in between the 2 sleeping areas and that can be their privacy screen?

    Just throwing out ideas.

Do you have a photo of room or can you describe the layout and/or give dimensions? What existing furniture do you have and what are colors of furniture (lt. Brown, white, espresso, black, etc)? Do you have any bedding, storage totes/baskets, art, window hangings already in the colors you mentioned (red, blue, and black; pink, green, and white)?

Do you have money in budget for the IKEA 4x4 expedit shelves previously mentioned?

I'm picturing the middle of the room split by two expedit shelves back to back. The one on James side is black or red and Julia's white. Use the shelves to make the eye think it is two Different rooms and design accordingly.

Each of their beds are then on separate sides of the shelves, with an accent wall in each of their colors... I would suggest accent wall of green with pink/white bedding, accents or accent wall of pink and green/white accents along with white furniture on Julia's side and accent wall of blue on James' side. You can then do black furniture and red/blue accents for James.

Are the floors wood? If so, you can let them each pick out a microfiber or shag rug at ikea or Walmart for ~$20/rug for the fluffy look they like.

I don't think we're going to ever see a photo of the room, the house in general, hear the dimensions, see a floor plan, know the budget, know what kind of window and door placement there is. Sounds like joesloppy123 has already decided on what bare minimum she wants (2 twin beds) and will let the kids decide entirely on their own. I suspect joesloppy123 just wants some support that she's doing the right thing to give the kids the credit card and let them go wild. (and perhaps another place to post photos of the kids) I say, go for it if that's what you want and think is best..

Personally, I think you're making a huge mistake putting two teens of opposite sex in the same room. (voice of personal experience) Being a teen is a time for rebellion and self exploration. If you're truly "re building" the home, I'd allow for two small rooms vs a large one. Or, what many families do with shared lake homes is make a "men's room" and a "women's room" where several generations share one room, do some same sex bonding and experience what it's like to be a older or younger member of the family. It can have quite a good effect on a teen who's trying to find themselves to see what other generations before them have become. I'd also make an ongoing list of chores that need to be completed each day before fun can happen and assign them to more then one person so it's a shared chore.

Best of luck with the kids. They look healthy and happy. Try to keep them that way. Spend more time with them and enjoy watching them as they disappear into adults. It won't be but a few years and then you can decorate that room any way you want, for yourself or the grand kids.

You don't seem very receptive to any of the advice you've been given (for free). If it's your lake house and you have no budget, why don't you suck it up and hire a proper designer to work with you.
And also, it's very hard to perceive your tone as anything but rude and ungrateful when you capitalize everything and do this !!!!!.
    Just my two cents.

A twelve year old is just barely, almost on the verge, and not exactly a teenager. An eight year old is four years away from being a twelve year old! How were you able to decorate their bedrooms at home? Go about decorating the lakehouse the same way you decorated your home. Drag them through Target, IKEA or Macy's. Let them pick out what they want, go to the cash register, pull out your credit card, sign the slip and take the stuff up to the lakehouse. If the kids aren't happy with what they picked out, it's their fault. If you hire a decorator and the kids aren't happy, blame the decorator. Either way, you are off the hook. This isn't rocket science, however if you need one I do know two. One lives in Houston and the other one lives in San Diego.

I like this idea, it allows for individual choices and spaces. The walls surrounding the beds could be painted different colors to suit each of your kids.
