Rec Room

Have a blank slate for a rec room. TV media area, exercise, game area. What can we do here?

Wow! I could have a lot of fun there too! :D. It looks like you have more than enough room to spread each area apart so that there is no confusing where the media area starts and stops, the dining area starts and stops and the exercise area starts and stops etc. You have great overhead lighting but will you want all of it on all the time? You can use mood lighting: lamps where your media room will be, a "pool table" chandelier over the pool table, for example. Even though you have carpet, rugs also help define areas. Add a coffee table and end tables to the media area (where the sectional is?). You need some art on those walls in a bad way! :)) What age group or groups be using this fabulous area?

Ask all in the family what they want.

You are on the right track. You just need to create different zones with easy and comfortable flow in between. This way you will have a well defined space and each space will be cozy. These photos are from a space similar to yours.

A touch of color with wall painting and decor

    Here's my top 8:

    1. In exercise recess, paint one wall with black chalkboard paint. Incorporate inspirational messages, lists of exercises, repetitions, chart of time / heart rate / pertinent info / play lists. Add a music element, a blue ball for stretching and a rowing machine? Add mirrors on one side wall only.
    2. Buy closet full shutter doors and hinge four panels together as a screen for your exercise space that you can open and close. Paint them with one coat of red spray paint for all the edges (don't worry about full coverage, then paint them with black chalk paint (annie sloan or any brand or add plaster of paris like the diy and make your own) distress the edges so the red rubs through a bit here and there.
    3. Treat the peach of the sofa as a lighter tone of copper, and lets add more copper in the form of a large rug to anchor that seating group - look at this steal of a deal http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Indoor-Rust-Beige-Area-Rug/7576677/product.html?refccid=N7ONOCP25DBYMFSBRN374SS754&searchidx=0
    4. Add two nubby black tweed club chairs - could be leather could be hidden recliners if they were the right profile - with their back to the stair and a copper toned metal filigree drum table between them. 5. Add a sofa table on the back side of the sectional between the exercise area and the tv pit - use this underneath to hide the little things you need when you work out below - get a big basket for the jump rope, the elastic bands, etc. Rolled up yoga mats might go in a black bin (office trash can?) in the back corner.

    6. a black painted low table you can put your feet up on and voila.
    7. Consider painting the old dining cabinet black too and distressing it back to the wood and adding down lights in the top. Stack the shelves with board games. Look for some craigslist rolling game chairs with arms to add to the game table. Use that sideboard for a drink tray - glasses, an ice bin, a carafe or britta pitcher, cocktail or soda stuff depending on the ages you have most of the time, fill the drawers with cocktail napkins and bar tools. RH catalog has some fun options here.

    8. Hang large canvas art prints with copper, neutrals on the wall adjacent to games. Around the television (here is the place to do a monster tv but put it on a swing arm so you can angle your work out towards it and entertain yourself !) , do a gallery wall of black and white photos, prints, graphics and matt them all in buff / frame them all in black.

Add more copper - one of the throwback pieces of 70's metal art in copper tones would be fun right across from the bottom of the stair with a black leather long bench underneath - these are very versatile if you need more seating for game day or card games that expand to include little family members. Use black ceramic lamps on the sofa table and perhaps a copper standing scuplture in the middle. Change out the boob light for a drum shade fixture hanging high in linen tones / semi drop / put the down lights on a dimmer.

Your rug is your color inspiration - copper tones, deep to rug tone / sofa is enough light, black, keep all the neutrals . . .they are fine. Fine one terrific copper and cobalt blue print for some pillows on the sofa with some plain black ones - wowsa! If you add
one color in the art besides copper tones, look for cobalt glass - great with black and copper. Differentiate in your eye the distinction between copper and rust - don't buy rust, buy copper - carry around a napkin or washcloth in the right tone to test things against . . . .

Have fun! Throw a party and enjoy .. .
